Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 2 - Issue 1

A word from Mr Broom.

We're now a week back into the term and learning is in full swing. Our focus for this half term is being 'a reflective learner'. On Monday we had a whole school assembly where we talked about the importance of reflecting on ourselves and how we could learn better. This topic will build on the Growth Mindset work we began last half term.

Meanwhile, the teaching staff met to discuss the changes we have implemented since September and review what needs to further change and tweak. I must say, the staff are working incredibly hard to provide some super learning experiences for our children.

Our wonderful year six children also took part in the local area indoor athletics competition on Thursday and I'm so proud to tell you that they came third overall, with some inspirational individual and team performances.

Next week, our leadership team are meeting on Monday afternoon to review the way that we teach English and our Nursery open afternoon is on Thursday.

Exciting times! 51 days to Christmas too!

New Look Football Kit

I am delighted to share with you our new football kit, expertly modelled by Alfie, Toby and Noah. The logo (designed by Alfie and Toby) features the White Rose Crest, expertly merged with the school logo. Noah's dad, Kevin, was instrumental in pulling this together but a massive thank you to Sherburn White Rose Football Club for their support with this.

Poppy Appeal

Poppies will be available in school next week, should you wish to buy one for a small donation. Year six children will be selling them to children at lunchtimes and all donations are welcome. We also have a special Remembrance Day lunch on Monday 13th November.

It goes without saying but we will be observing a period of silence on Monday 13th November too.

Slight Lunchtime Menu Change for Monday

On Monday we will be having our special Bonfire lunch with a special treat of hotdogs! This is a slight change to the menu that I wanted to make you all aware of. Thank you.

Children in Need - Friday 17th November

For this year's Children in Need we will be inviting our children and staff to wear 'dots' for the day rather than usual school uniform. This will be for a small donation to the cause, payable preferably via parentpay.

We also have a special Children in Need lunch on the same day. More details to follow.

Halloween disco a huge success!

A massive thank you to everyone who helped out with the Halloween disco. The children (and adults) had a wonderful time and it lovely to see so many people getting involved. Long may it continue.

Wonderful Low Mill work on display

Mrs Fitch and Mrs Middleton took the time to display the year six children's work from their recent presentations on their Low Mill residential visit. The display in our hall looks wonderful. Well done to everyone involved.

E-Safety Course for Parents - 2nd March 2018

I know it's a while off but we've managed to secure some e-safety training for parents/carers on 2nd March 2018 from 2pm-3pm. If you're a parent like me, you're always wondering what the latest guidance is on making sure our children are safe online. This short one hour course will provide those attending with some invaluable information, provided by the NSPCC in collaboration with O2.

A point to note that I found out earlier this week. At all O2 shops, they have a 'Guru' who will provide support and advice on e-safety to anyone calling in, irrelevant of the network you happen to be with.

Headlice Invaders! - Beware

As the heating in school is turned on, classrooms around the country become the perfect breeding grounds for headlice. In an effort to reduce the problem, please check your child's hair regularly. The North Yorkshire Healthy Child Team recommend conditioning and running through your child's hair with a comb every week. Thank you.

ParentView Survey

You may or may not be aware that the government use a website called ParentView to gather the opinions of parents/carers when inspecting schools. Please help us by completing the online survey. It takes about five minutes to do and will help us to further improve as well as celebrate the things we are doing well.

Please click here to access the ParentView survey.

Bags 2 School Collection

Together with the Friends of Hungate, we will be running a Bags2School collection on 20th November. This is an opportunity to put those unwanted clothes/materials to good use. We'll be sending a collection bag home after half term but I wanted to let you know so you can hang on to any items, should you decided to do a clear out during the holidays.

Co-Op Fundraising Update

Just an update on our Co-operative fundraising – we’ve now raised £569.00!

Please remember to support the fundraising for our playground markings by logging on to and signing into your account – or join if you are not a member - or you can go straight to the Community Fund profile page at

You can then nominate Sherburn Hungate’s playground markings as the local cause you would like to support. Ask family, friends and neighbours for their support too! The fundraising runs until 11th November 2017 and we will receive 1% of everything that Co-op members spend on Co-op branded products and services. The more members that choose our cause the more money we will get.

Lunch Information

We have three special lunches coming up over the next few weeks.

6th November (Monday) - Reception Parents - Bonfire Lunch - 11:55am

13th November (Monday) - Y2 Parents - Remembrance Lunch - 11:55am

17th November (Friday) - Y1 Parents - Children in Need Lunch - 11:55am

In addition, there is a change to the menu. Monday of week 1 will now be Cheese & Tomato Pizza.

Please remember to pay dinner money in advance for the week, rather than daily, wherever possible - £2.10 per day, £10.50 for 5 meals.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Reception Class who are our attendance champions in school this week with 98.4%.

As you can see below, out attendance in many classes is way above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

The overall attendance this week is 97.1%. Fantastic! This is becoming a habbit and a good one.
