February Update
Lift Every Voice and SING
On the First Day of February all grade levels have been preparing their music scores for Lift Every Voice and Sing. We will begin a deep dive into the text of this iconic piece on Thursdays for the next month and reflect on how this relates to our own lives.
Our next performance will be as a Music Department in the Black History Month Program on February 28th! We hope to see you there!
The band room is alive with music!
Congratulations to the 4th - 8th grade bands on their fine performances on January 24th and 26th. Shout out to our Jazz Ensemble for their fine performance at the Prairie Jazz Festival on January 25th. As an added bonus, we assembled a small pep band that performed at the boys basketball game on January 30th. Ms. Miracle is one proud band director and noticed the band's growth from our December performance at Nicolet HS.
The 4th grade band is transitioning from Recorders to the NUVO pre-band instruments in class this week. They will play each different instrument for 10 days as they learn the basics and discover which instrument they are best suited to play in 5th grade band. Bands 5-8 are all beginning new music for our Spring Band Concert which will take place here at Glen Hills on May 16th which will include grades 4-8 as well as our Jazz groups. 6th - 8th grade band members have the opportunity to learn a solo or duet and participate in the WSMA Solo & Ensemble on Saturday, March 18th. Registration for that event will begin this week. Continue to check your email for the latest details and as always, reach out if you have questions.
Orchestra, What a Great Concert!
At the end of January, Orchestra, Choir and Band had concerts for all grades. Great job, orchestra students! It was wonderful for scholars to be able to see their classmates from different classes and grade levels perform. Putting on a concert is no easy task. It involves cooperation from everyone. Scholars need to practice being a good audience member, pay attention to where they need to go and when they are playing next. This is all in addition to preparing musical works for months before the concert. Scholars are often told that in orchestra we have to act as a team to put on a successful concert. I am proud of how students represented Glen Hills at the concert!
Be on the lookout for a signup Google Form for Solo and Ensemble happening March 18th. This is for students Grades 6-8 who want the extra challenge of playing a performance ready solo or small ensemble piece in front of a judge for a rating. Those who are interested need to sign up by Feb. 8th.
