Layers of the Sun
Describing the Sun
Core
The Sun's core is the central region where nuclear reactions consume hydrogen to form helium. These reactions release the energy that ultimately leaves the surface as visible light. cse.ssl.berkeley.edu

Radiative Zone
Energy moves slowly outward. Energy is primarily transported toward the exterior by diffusion and thermal conduction.

Convective Zone
Where energy is transferred by convection.
Photosphere
The visible surface of the sun that we see.

Chromospere
This relatively thin layer of the Sun is sculpted by magnetic field lines that restrain the electrically charged solar plasma.

Corona
The ionized elements within the corona (or solar atmosphere) glow in the x-ray and extreme ultraviolet wavelengths.

Sunspots
Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the photosphere of the sun that appear visibly as dark spots compared to surrounding regions.

Prominence
A large, bright, gaseous feature extending outward from the Sun's surface, often in a loop shape. Prominences are anchored to the Sun's surface in the photosphere, and extend outwards into the Sun's corona.
