Shaw Nature Reserve
On Monday, April 4, 2023, the Riverbend Middle School JAG Club took a field trip to the Shaw Nature Reserve in Pacific!
On this field trip, the students learned about careers working with the Department of Conservation, as well as what it takes to enter this particular career field. The counselors talked about their education and training, including what got them interested in this area of employment. The students learned about wetland ecology, including how beavers are an integral part of creating this environment, and how the wetlands serve as a sponge to help purify nature. Students examined the wetland waters and different plant life with magnifying glasses, discovering different animal tracks in the mud.
The second part of the day involved orienteering. Each of the students were equipped with a hand-held GPS device and sent in groups on a scavenger hunt to locate different boxes and complete a variety of challenges. The groups used strategy and leadership skills to navigate the reserve and find the hidden treasures. Lastly, the groups aided the reserve by helping beautify it, moving debris in order to keep the trails clear of any dangerous logs or rocks, and also removed litter from the grounds.
