It's September!

Now that the school year is off and running, we hope that you have found time to set a goal and explore the strategies within that element. If you haven't, be sure to check out our website www.sites.google.com/esc9.net/hrs for a self-audit that might help you narrow your focus toward a specific goal. If you have already set a goal, be sure to let your R9 support staff know so that their visits to your classroom can support you and the work you are doing.

Strategy Spotlight

Let's dive into Element 7: Processing Content. A lot of times, you'll see this element discussed in relation to Element 6: Chunking Content. As you can see below, the "chunks" of a lesson are followed by a processing opportunity for students that can take many forms. Keep reading to find out more about different strategies that can be used to help students process what they have learned.


*Note: The scale is found in Becoming a Reflective Teacher. Because of that, the element number is from the original version of ASOT.

Element 7: Processing Content

Processing content involves any strategy that allows the students' brains to categorize and store information just learned in a learning chunk. This can take many forms. What you'll notice is that this is where the elements tend to crossover.

  • Summarizing what was just learned using strategies like GIST
  • Asking questions about the "chunk"
  • Participating in a strategy like Think-Pair-Share
  • Using graphic organizers to record and represent new knowledge

Student Feedback

Megan Flores, 8th grade language arts teacher at Barwise Middle School, took a step outside her comfort zone and surveyed her students to find out their thoughts about her classroom and lessons. What she found out is that her students had lots of opinions, and it wasn't too scary to hear them. In fact, she learned that there were some simple things she could do to enhance the climate of her classroom and show students she valued their thoughts. Take a look at her video below.

ASOT in Action Submissions

We know you work hard to try new things and to be the best teacher you can be. We want to celebrate all that you do and share what is working in classrooms across our region. If you have tried an ASOT element and think others could benefit from the idea, please consider taking a few pictures or even a video and submitting them to us to be included in future newsletters or other shared resources.

Please note that the October 16/17 dates had to be rescheduled due to conflicts. The November 13/14 dates will cover Part 2 of ASOT, and the third part of ASOT will now be addressed December 6/7 (Session #346808). Should this cause an issue for you, you may attend the third set of dates in the spring session, March 26/27, in order to complete your training in ASOT. Please let us know if you need that option.
