DECEMBER 2022
Principal's Message
Every Winter brings us colder weather, the possibility of much needed rain, and the Holiday season! And yes, cold and flu season… Oh, and Covid! As a school, we continue to work hard to minimize the spread of illness, while at the same time trying to maximize attendance and student learning. To measure our growth from the start of the school year until now, students are taking the second iReady diagnostic assessment. In August the results showed us that 23% of our students in grades 1st-5th were at grade level in Reading and 11% in Math. OMSD has set a goal for all school sites to improve by 20% in both subjects by the school year. iReady #2 is expected to be completed by December 15, where I am confident that we will be able to celebrate a major accomplishment! Please be prepared to receive your child’s results shortly and discuss with them how they are contributing to the schoolwide goal of improving by 20%. Additionally, this diagnostic assessment helps guide individual teachers to specific areas of support and interventions. As a parent, you can set goals and expectations for your child to best prepare them for the next grade level and beyond. After high school comes college!

Runners Assemble!
The City of Ontario is proud to continue its sponsorship of the Annual 5K Reindeer Run and Rudolph’s Dash Fun Run. The race continues to evolve into a community and family event with over 4,000 participants and growing! The City of Ontario has joined efforts with the Ontario-Montclair Promise Scholars, an award winning program designed to assist Ontario-Montclair youth by helping them prepare for their journey towards a college education.
All proceeds from the race will be donated to their program and the City's Empowerment Scholarship, which gives Ontario community members from low-income backgrounds the opportunity to participate in recreation activities, classes, and programs that will enrich their lives. The City is committed to providing a safe, healthy environment for all our community members to thrive.
The 5K Reindeer Run will begin and end in downtown Ontario! The 5K Reindeer Run is perfect for experienced superheroes, heroes-in-training, or real-life heroes who don't wear capes. Participants can run or walk, or families and friends may participate together.
The family-friendly Rudolph’s Dash Fun Run will begin at the Start/Finish line of the 5K Reindeer Run. Kids can run or walk this shorter course, or families may participate together. Rudolph’s Dash Fun Run is geared for younger superheroes, super moms or dads with their strollers, or anyone who wants to join the race on a smaller scale! After the race, spend time with us in our Rudolph’s Roundup area, where you can visit local businesses and race sponsors or have the kids participate in exercise activities and craft booths. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family!
Join the fun!
Eagles Can Earn Their Reading Counts Diploma
GOAL: 25 Million Words Read
Parents, did you know that Eagles can earn degrees based on their reading? Each book a student reads is eligible for Reading Counts! points. By taking and passing the Reading Counts! quiz for each book, students collect points. The more points a student earns, the closer a student gets to his reading goals as well as several rewards and prizes.
Students can earn up to four degrees, including Associate, Bachelors, Masters and the highest, a Doctorate. Medals are awarded at each grade level to the student with the highest quiz points! A trophy is awarded at each grade level for the class with the highest quiz points. If students reach the schoolwide goal of reading 25 million words, students will be treated to the event of year, the Battle of Corona, Dr. Flores vs. Mr. Garcia in a sumo wrestling spectacular!
You can check how many Reading Counts! points your student's books are by checking Book Expert Online. Students can also continue their reading online by using the CloudLibrary app to read e-books from the Ontario City Library. Click below to sign up for a library card.

Ms. Leslie Garcia
2nd Grade Teacher
Hello, my name is Leslie Garcia. I grew up in Montclair, CA. I attended Moreno AVID Elementary and Serrano Middle School in the Ontario-Montclair School District and graduated from Montclair High School in the Chaffey Joint Unified School District in 2015. After high school, I went to pursue higher education. My interest in education developed into a passion to become an elementary teacher when doing my undergraduate studies as a Liberal Studies major at the California State University of Chico. I transferred into University Polytechnic Pomona where I completed my multiple subject teaching credentials in 2021.
I come from a single-parent-Mexican family household. I have three sisters. We have a Husky named Firulais. My mom was able to raise four independent women who have earned a college degree. My mom is my biggest inspiration; she has always encouraged my sisters and I to follow our dreams. I am family oriented and enjoy Game Night, strength training, watching movies and traveling.
I started working as a substitute teacher in OMSD in 2019. I then took a long term 4th grade assignment at Corona February 2022-March 2022, where I grew fond of the school community within the students, families and staff. After the long term assignment I was offered a position at the school where I became the 2nd Residential Substitute Teacher. As Corona’s Residential Substitute, I lead interventions for Level 1 and Level 2 English Learners during the school’s Universal Access instructional block. In conjunction with the school’s Instructional Coach, we would plan and implement strategic lessons using a variety of instructional strategies (TPR, GLAD, SDAIE) in a small group setting. Furthermore, I would respond to the occasional need to cover a classroom as a substitute teacher during shortages. This would entail delivering teacher’s lesson plans at various grade levels, implementing effective classroom management strategies.
Since the start of the 2022-2023 School Year, I have now been hired as a first year teacher here at Corona where I teach 2nd grade. I love coming to work and being part of a welcoming and supportive school community. The families, the students and the staff make coming to work enjoyable. One of the many things I like about working at Corona is the sense of community the school has created. Corona has created an inviting and safe learning environment not just for their students but also for the staff. I have always envisioned working in a school where I have opportunities to take risks and learn, which is exactly what I think Corona offers for their students and staff.
During my time as an undergraduate student, I came across a quote that has resonated with me over the years...
“I want my students to remember our classroom as a home that they may leave, but it will never leave them” (Miller 2013).
It is my hope as a teacher to create a positive learning environment with my students and colleagues.

December's SEL Theme
SOCIAL AWARENESS: Perspective-Taking and Empathy
During the month of December, your child’s SEL instruction will focus on Social Awareness to develop perspective-taking and empathy skills when working with others. Conflict is a normal part of life, and happens between friends, siblings, children, and parents. Effective conflict resolution keeps relationships intact. Students will learn they can reach positive agreements and strengthen their relationships with others.
