21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!

Well sports fans ... now that we're a week removed from Spring Break, the 3rd quarter of the school year has officially come to an end. You know what that means? Anyone? Anyone? That's right ... we've got roughly 9 weeks of school left ... or what the sports world calls the HOME STRETCH!

The HOME STRETCH for Brickie athletics will be FAST & FURIOUS! The month of April is here and spring sports have shifted gears and are now moving FULL SPEED AHEAD! In fact, spring sports are already getting some WORK WORK WORK done right here in H-town as both Baseball and Softball opened their seasons on the diamond!!

Fasten your seat belts ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Softball

After spending most of their 1st few weeks of practice in the fieldhouse and some heavy rains buried part of the field under water, out came the sun and dried up all the rain ... and the Lady Brickies FINALLY got on the field to host a pair of DAC schools this past week!

On Tuesday, Hobart hosted 2019 sectional champion and current area #5-ranked Chesterton to open the season. The first 2 innings were INTENSE with neither team able to generate any offense against some STELLAR D-D-D-DEFENSE and the score was knotted at 0-0. In the bottom of the 3rd, senior Hannah Camarena ... a Trinity Christian College commit ... BELTED a 2-run HOMER to straight-away center field to give the Lady Brickies a 2-0 LEAD!! In the top of the 4th, Chesterton plated a run to cut the deficit in half, but that was as close as they would get. In the bottom half of the 5th, Camarena LAUNCHED ANOTHER 2-run HOMERUN to extend the Hobart lead to 4-1!! The Lady Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE took care of the rest as our girls SHINED BRIGHT ON THE DIAMOND (thank you Rihana) and secured the season opening VICTORY! Senior Saylem Smith was masterful through 3 innings and earned the 'W' on the mound ... Camarena switched from shortstop to pitcher near the end of the 4th and picked up the save! Junior Sydney Belk scored twice in her first ever softball appearance for the Lady Brickies!

Saturday, the LaPorte Slicers visited The Friendly City for an afternoon contest under the sun. The Slicers played some "small ball" early and manufactured 2 runs in the 1st inning and 2 more over the next 4 innings to take a 4-0 lead midway through the 5th. In the bottom half of the 5th, Brickie senior Alejandra Arauz recorded Hobart's 1st hit of the contest and scored 3 batters later when Camarena scorched a 2-out, RBI single to the gap in right-center field! Unfortunately, that was as close as the Lady Brickies would get as LaPorte tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 6th and left town with a hard earned 5-1 victory. Hobart hit the ball hard and BATTLED all afternoon, just had trouble finding gaps in the LaPorte defense and couldn't quite get much going at the plate.

The Lady Brickies are 1-1 after earning a split during opening week. Our girls play their 3rd straight Duneland Conference school (Michigan City) Monday before NCC competition begins on Thursday against Kankakee Valley. No doubt about it ... after already upsetting a top 10 squad, these girls CAN PLAY!!

Baseball

It's been nearly 2 years since our boys took the field. With more time to prepare than anyone could ever want ... why not get the proverbial ball rolling and play 3 games the first week of the season? For the Brickies, it was just what the doctor ordered!

On Monday, the Brickies opened their 2021 campaign at home against the Merrillville Pirates ... and they were DOMINANT! The Pirates went scoreless in the top of the 1st and when Hobart took their turn in the bottom half of the inning ... let's just say Merrillville felt the wrath of the 2 years hiatus. A walk and bloop single put 2 men on for Brickie senior Jaden Deel who HIT ONE THAT HASN'T LANDED YET!! After Deel's BLAST put our boys up 3-0, Hobart continued to parade runners around the bases and ended the 1st inning up 8-0! Over the next few innings of play, each team was able to put some runs on the board and heading into the bottom of the 5th, the Brickie lead was 10-4. Freshman Jevan Andrews and junior Kaidin Click each BELTED 2-run doubles to give Hobart the 14-4 VICTORY thanks to the IHSAA mercy rule! Believe it or not, the Pirates ... despite scoring 4 runs ... DID NOT REGISTER A HIT! Senior Gavin Gallagher, classmate Ryan Ellis, and Andrews combined to throw the 20th NO-HITTER in SCHOOL HISTORY! Not too shabby :)

Tuesday, the Brickies traveled East to area #7-ranked Washington Township for game #2 of opening week. After plating 14 runs in the season opener, Hobart couldn't find much rhythm in the batter's box and only managed two 1st inning runs. Fortunately, junior Ivan Balboa and sophomore Cameron Gonzalez were LIGHTS OUT on the mound and tossed a SHUTOUT to help our boys earn their 2nd VICTORY in as many days! Ellis and Click each had extra-base hits as the Brickies secured a hard-fought 2-0 win.

On Friday, Hobart was once again on the road ... this time it was @ storied Schreiber Field at LaPorte High School. The Slicers have won the most state championships in state history (8) and are ALWAYS tough! Well ... on Good Friday, the Brickies were TOUGHER and BETTER!! Deel went 4-for-4 at the plate with 3 doubles and 2 RBI ... sophomore Kyle Feterick matched him going 4-for-4, but notched 3 RBI and both Ellis and Balboa registered 2 hits to help Hobart leave town with an impressive 11-4 VICTORY! Gonzalez only allowed 1 earned run in picking up his 1st varsity win on the bump and senior Bryce Niksich tossed 2 innings of relief to close it out.

The Brickies are 3-0 and currently ranked #9 in Da Region! 4 more games dot the landscape next week before NCC play begins. As former Chicago White Sox Hall of Fame announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson used to say, "Don't stop now boys!"
