Rockbrook Reminder

1st Week Edition, 08-20-2020

Welcome Back Bulldogs

It was an exciting week as we welcomed back our Bulldogs in two shifts. Tuesday and Wednesday we saw half of the students in-person and on Thursday and Friday we saw our remaining in-person students and and connected with Extended Campus students. We are thrilled to be together in a variety of ways and back to being closer as a community, while looking out for the safety of students and families. Thank you to all who are joining us both in-person and online. We are committed to making this an amazing year for learning, friendships, community, and fun.

Please remember to complete our health screener each day before your child attends in person. This helps our school and district to provide a safe learning environment.

After School Plans

If you haven't yet done so please complete your child's after school plan document.

(Kindergarten families, please do so after you receive your child's class placement)

We understand that student pickup plans may occasionally change. To ensure all students are accounted for at the end of each day we ask that families make their best attempt to use a typical mode of pickup on most days. Please take a moment to fill out the form below to indicate your child's typical dismissal plan. In the event that you need to pick your child up via a different method, we ask that a parent call the office at least 30 minutes before the end of the school day. The office will notify the student and their teacher of this change of plan.

Approving a Child to Go Home with Another Child's Parent:

In the event that you would like to approve your child to go home with another child's parent we need contact from both you and the other child's parent. This can be in the form of a note, email, or phone call to the office. Staff will not dismiss your child to another child's parent without prior contact, preferably to the main office so that this can be communicated to others (Classroom Teacher, Club66, etc).

Masks Maintenance

All in-person students should have received 3 masks by now. We encourage families to wash these regularly. Students are also being provided lanyards for keeping track of their mask during regular mask breaks. While we know that wearing masks is sometimes difficult, it is a critical part of how we are able to be in school. For further details about safety measures across our district, be sure to review our District Pandemic Safety Plan linked with this newsletter.

And the Beat Goes On

We invite all 5th and 6th-grade students and families to help the BEAT go on in Westside by being a part of our award winning Band and Strings program! All in-person and fully virtual students are welcomed and invited to play a musical instrument this year! Due to district and health guidelines, Band and Strings will be fully virtual while Westside is in Yellow or Red Mode. Students will receive one live virtual lesson a week as well as one web-based home assignment. When the district is in Green Mode, we are hopeful we will be able to make music together in-person! We will be visiting with the 6th-grade students the first week of school and setting our returning learners up for success with their virtual learning experience. 6th-grade parents, please click on the sixth-grade registration link below to register your child for band and strings this school year. If you are new to Westside or did not have a chance to play an instrument last year, you MAY sign up for band/strings this year as well following the links below.

5th-grade families, we will be sending out a recruitment video on our first virtual Wednesday (August 26) through your classroom teachers. Please watch the video, discuss instrument options with your child and then register on the link for 5th grade Band and Strings by Labor Day. 5th-grade classes will begin mid-September so you have time to register and get your instrument. We will be hosting information sessions for families that register for band and strings as our start date approaches, but in the meantime, please connect if you have any questions about our program! We can not wait to welcome you and are excited to KEEP THE BEAT going in the Westside Community Schools!

All Students Should Bring a Refillable Water Bottle

To prevent the spread of germs and viruses we are asking all students to bring a refillable water bottle. Bottle fillers are in the process of being installed and bottles can also be filled at class sinks. We would prefer if bottles be refillable through a non-drinking opening (example to refill a disposable bottle the drinking surface may contact any refilling source). If students forget their water bottle we will have a small supply of spares on hand, so no child will be denied access to water.

Note: While we appreciate the popularity of such items as Hydro-flask, Yeti, etc, please consider having the water bottle be small to medium-sized. Students will be carrying these with them to various locations in the school. An inexpensive option may make replacement easier if the bottle is lost or damaged.

Access to Rockbrook will be limited to current students, current staff, approved vendors and contractors, and invited visitors with administrative approval. Until further notice, no other visitors will be permitted. For more specific information, please view the district’s pandemic return to learn plan.
