3-5 Elementary Tech Goals 2018-19
Preparing 21st Century Learners
Why Tech Goals?
The term "goals" is used intentionally as we deploy 1:1 devices in our shift to more transformative learning experiences that address the requirements of the 21st Century. The "goals" by trimester provide a benchmark to work toward and assess your learning and implementation and are not an evaluative checklist. Working together in PLCs at grade level, as building teams and across the district, will allow innovation in this transformation.
The "goals" are based upon the new Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS), released December 2017, replace the 2009 Michigan Educational Technology Standards for Students (METS-S). From the MDE: These updated competencies focus on learning enhanced by technology, rather than on technology tools. The MITECS are aligned to the Top 10 in 10 focus area of Learner-Centered Supports, reflecting a learner-driven approach that empowers students to be active participants in determining their educational pursuits. The MITECS support learning in all content areas. Technology should no longer be taught as a separate class, but rather integrated across the content areas enhancing learning. Many schools are already taking this approach to teaching technology.

Schoology vs. SeeSaw vs. Weebly
Schoology
This is the Learning Management System, chosen by the district, supported by the ISD, that all teachers and students will use as the entry point or digital connection to the classroom. For 3-5, this is also where much of the digital aspect of learning and assessment will take place. For K-2, this may remain the digital face of the classroom, similar to how you may have used a Weebly page.
Weebly
If this has been your communication tool, now is the time to make the shift to Schoology. While they are not the same platform, it is important that we provide parents, guardians and students one place to access information. When you consider the expectations for Schoology for all teachers, beginning day one, it is evidence of this shift. Classroom procedures, routines, and communication as well as daily agendas (which can be posted in the context of a weekly agenda) should all be communicated through Schoology. For those of you attending CBD training, there will be choice work/exploration time that will allow you to accomplish this with support, if you choose. Additionally, there will be Schoology training and work sessions at the ISD an In-District. Don't forget to check the Summer Choice PD link! To be clear, Weebly should not be used as a communication resource or tool moving forward. Schoology is the platform of choice.
SeeSaw
SeeSaw is a digital portfolio platform that in the subscription versus prides significant communication opportunities for home and classroom, as well as interactive lessons and assignments that are attainable to even our youngest learners. For this reason, all K-2 teachers will have licenses for SeeSaw. For teachers in 3-5, and for "specials" teachers, you are welcome to use SeeSaw as a digital tool in conjunction with Schoology in the free version. If there is a significant reason why it is the best tool for a particular class or grade level, consideration will be given in 19/20 for licensing additional classrooms.
