Romeo: Internal Conflict

People should not search for love

Act 1, Scene 1

In the beginning Benvolio notices that Romeo looks down. Benvolio asks Romeo what is wrong. Romeo says, "out of her favor where I am in love" (Shakespeare 999). Rosaline doesn't love Romeo back, Romeo has been rejected, and he is in a hurry to find love. Rosaline doesn't love Romeo back because she doesn't want to be in a relationship.

Act 2, Scene 2

Romeo is speaking his sorrows to Benvolio, "Can I go forward when my heart is here? Turn back, dull earth, and find thy center out" (Shakespeare 1021). Romeo is trying to feel love, he is trying to be happy with love. He thinks without love his life is incomplete.

Act 3, Scene 5

Romeo has now found a new love, Juliet. He doesn't even think about Rosaline anymore. Romeo says to Juliet, "Farewell! I will omit no opportunity, That may convey my greetings, love, to thee" (Shakespeare 1064). Romeo describes how he would never miss an opportunity to write his love to Juliet. Romeo is in a hurry to be with her. Their love is being even more rushed due to Romeo's banishment.

Romeo says, "If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking and you beat love down" (Shakespeare 1009). People Shouldn't search for love because when you rush you may not know the person you are "in love" with. They can be someone bad, that you could have never known could act that way. Love can hurt bad when you are in a hurry and don't think.
