In 1638 Shahjahan shifted the Mughal Empire capital from Agra to Delhi. A new royal palace known as Red Fort Delhi was made . It was begun in 1639 and completed in 1648. The name Red Fort comes from the massive red sandstone walls that surround it.The Red Fort walls extend up to 2 km. In length with the height varying from 18 m. on the river side to 33 m. The Red Fort has two main entrances, the Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate. A gateway called Lal Purdah can be seen on the left of the DiwaniAm which was the way out of the court. The gate was used by the Emperor and important members in the court who were called Lal Perdaris. The mosque was built by Auranzeb and was used for offering prayers The Red Fort also houses the DiwaniAam or the Hall of Public Audiences, where the Emperor would sit on a marbled paneled alcove studded with gems.
- Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor was declared emperor of India by the rebels . Known more for his poetry than skills in war,The uprising, however, was unsuccessful and he was tried for treason in his own home, the Red Fort.
