Here you will be educated on the American Indians strive to defeat poverty and discrimination. Most didn't even have shoes or clothing. American Indian men earned an income less than half of what a white man made. Because of this extreme poverty and the inspiration of other civil rights groups the American Indians formed the Red Power Movement during the 1960s. This movement was created to to gain the right to govern their own communities, and demanded government money for lands that had been taken from them illegally.
The Struggles for Progress
The Alcatraz Occupation
Red Power Activists occupied the abandoned prison of Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay. Receiving national news coveraged the protesters attempted to buy the island from the government with bead and cloth. the used the same price the Dutch colonists had paid for the manhattan island in 1626.
Wounded Knee
The American Indian Movement (AIM) became a major force behind the Red Power movement by attempting to renew American Indian culture and recognize their rights.
Gaining Ground
This movement gained plenty of media attention and recovered over 48,000 acres of land. Eventually congress awarded the American Indians with $81.5 million dollars allowing them to buy 300,000 more acres of land. This was a very successful movement.
