Third Grade Newsletter

January 7, 2016

Winter is here!!

Winter came! Continue to send a warm coat, boots, snow pants, gloves and hat with your third grader. Also, remind your child unless they have special permission ahead of time, they are not to be in the third grade hall before school. They are to be with the rest of the elementary students on the playground until 8:15 (8:20-8:25 on Wednesdays). Thank you!

In math we have started unit 5. This unit is working with place value using whole numbers to the millions and decimals through thousandths. Please continue to help your child master their addition and subtraction facts and work toward mastering multiplication. Our new goal is to have all third graders complete 40 subtraction facts in 2 minutes by April. If your child has not completed 100 addition facts they will continue to bring home a practice sheet every night until they can.

Social Studies

The third graders are learning about communities in social studies. Soon, they will become presenters and use augmented reality to teach us about their community. It will be a good time!

A.R. Update: A.R. Update: The last day to earn points for second trimester is February 22nd.

In reading we are learning how to get to know characters in a fiction chapter book. Students are asked to keep the books here at school so they will have them here each day. We will do different activities with them so I want them here. They may read other books at home. If you would like them to read another fiction book and practice with them about characters and their traits at home GO FOR IT!!!!

In English we will be doing some opinion writing. In grammar we are studying verbs.

We will not be having a spelling list the week of Jan. 18th, but we will be practicing our third grade words. We will have a test over the third grade words on Friday, Jan. 22nd. I will send a list home with students this Friday. They may start studying them now. These words are also on spelling city if they want to study using those activities-third grade words. We would like them to know all these words at the end of the year. Also, if they get 100% on the 22nd they will not have to take the test again.
