Cinco de mayo
My experience of cinco de mayo
Who celebrates 5 de mayo ?
- This is an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
Why do they celebrate ?
- Cinco de Mayo is NOT a celebration of Mexican independence. Rather, it is a celebration of Mexico’s victory over France in the battle at Puebla during the Franco-Mexican war (1861-1867).
What is the historical significance of the 5 mayo de 1862
A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
