Cerebral-Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)
Presented by the Medical-Educational-Therapeutic Evaluation (METE) Team
ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF LEARNERS WITH SIGNIFICANT MEDICAL, DEVELOPMENTAL, COGNITIVE, AND ADAPTIVE CHALLENGES
October 1, 2016, at seresc in bedford nh
Who Should Attend?
Teams of professionals (teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals, nurses and others) who work with infants, toddlers, school-age children or adults who have neurological insults.
Description/Anticipated Outcomes
Cerebral/Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is a brain-based visual disability, and is the most prevalent visual handicap in the United States among students. CVI also is one of the most confusing visual conditions to understand and typically is associated with individuals who have neurological disabilities. Although this association is valid, there also is a large group of individuals who have near normal visual acuity but have no identified neurological disabilities, or may not be identified as having a visual disability at all. Both groups may have a range of other behaviors or hidden disabilities that mask the presence of CVI.
This half-day session will:
(a) define CVI,
(b) discuss CVI as associated with individuals who have obvious neurological disabilities and those who for whom there is little or no concerns regarding vision,
(c) compare the characteristics of these two groups of individuals and differentiate them from other students who may have no visual disabilities and those who have ocular disabilities,
d) explore the impact of both types of CVI on communication, social interaction, self-recognition, learning and personal safety, and
e. discuss strategies to consider when working with individuals who have Cerebral/ Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).
As a result of attending, Participants will:
- Cite at least four (4 ) functional behavioral benchmarks to watch for as indicators of possible Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).
- Discuss possible hidden disabilities associated with Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment ( CVI.
- Recall three (3) strategies to consider when working with individuals who have CVI.
