Mrs. Kelley's 1st Grade Class Newsletter
We had a wonderful time at the Arboretum this week! We got very lucky with the weather. Thank you to all the moms that spent the day helping us!
Last Friday was our last spelling test for the year! There will be no more homework this school year. I do still encourage Istation and Fasttmath and reading everyday but there will not be an assignment for your child. I have had several parents ask about access to Istation and Fasttmath over the summer. I was told that Istation WOULD be available to your child however I haven't received an answer yet about Fasttmath. But I do encourage keeping up with those addition and subtraction facts over the summer. There are many different websites to play speed drills. There are several on our website. Flashcards are also a great way to practice!
Homestead Field Day will be this Friday. Please have your student wear a blue shirt on that day. The cafeteria will have a sandwich sack lunch available to purchase on Field Day. There will not be a "hot lunch" option. Please see the email I sent out last week from PTA to sign up to volunteer for Field Day.
Please send your child's camp hat (baseball cap) and camp mail by this Wednesday, May 18th. Please make sure each camp letter is labeled with your child's name on every envelope and day 1, day 2, etc. We will have 5 days of camp mail.
The last day to order books from Scholastic will be this Tuesday. This would be an inexpensive way to purchase books to keep your student reading over the summer! Please click the link below to order online. All orders are due by May 17th.

SPECIALS THIS WEEK:
During our Reading Hour kids are engaged in several different activities. The one that I think is the most important is "Read To Self." Kids choose what books they want to read for enjoyment, not an assignment.
The first few weeks of 1st grade, many of our students were "reading" picture books by telling the story through picture details. Many were not decoding the words on the page. Your kiddos have come so far! They are reading words and stories, and in some cases, even reading chapter books!
Please keep your soon-to-be 2nd grader reading this summer! Your 2nd grade teacher will thank you! Maybe they can even read to a "friend." This little bunny on the floor seems to love the story.
Kids have been learning how to make graphs and tally charts.
We surveyed the class to find out what everyone's favorite sport was and made a tally chart to collect data.
We organized our data into a Bar Graph! Basketball had the most votes.
Kids had a GREAT time on our field trip to the Dallas Arboretum!
Thank you to our wonderful moms for helping to chaperone and for all the great pictures!
Hands on learning.
We attended an Arboretum program called Plants Are Alive. Kids learned all about a plant life cycle. Here we play-act and pretend to be seeds.
Blooming to the sun! What a wonderful day at the Dallas Arboretum!
