2nd Quarter Citizenship Award Winners
These students were recognized by various staff members throughout the building for their leadership in demonstrating excellent behavior at our school. They have been consistent role models in showing others how to be safe, respectful, responsible, problem solvers at Blue Ash Elementary.

WINTER WONDERLAND
What is Winter Wonderland?
With regulations for COVID 19 making a traditional field day impossible this year, Blue Ash wants to replace it with something fun, safe, and different! Winter Wonderland will take place on a day when we receive a minimum of 3-4 inches of snow, the wind chill is above 20 degrees, and school is in session. Grade levels will be scheduled for 30 minutes on the field for some fun in the snow! The field will be divided so that cohorts will remain together.
Communication
Should we get the necessary amount of snow to make this happen, AND we are still in session, families will receive notification from the school and the classroom teacher the evening prior to event.
The email will remind parents to please send their child to school the next day with the following items in a trash bag:
Snow Boots
Winter Gloves
Snow pants
Change of clothes
Contact Me!
If you need help acquiring boots, gloves, or pants, or if you have any other questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks for helping make this year special for our students- even if it looks different than normal!
Chess Club
Registration is now open for the Spring session of Blue Ash Chess Club! It is designed for all 1st through 4th graders. Participants will learn all the basics as well as get ready to play chess tournaments if they would like.
The club will be held virtually using Zoom and online chess tools, so students can learn chess and see their schoolmates. Classes will be held Monday afternoons, 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Club starts on February 22nd and runs for 12 weeks through May 17th (no class when school is closed). The registration form can be filled out online here. Please email Evelyn Wagner with any questions at evelynabeles@gmail.com
Attention 4th Grade Parents!
Save the Date!
We are excited to welcome your rising 5th grader to the Greene School for the 2021-22 school year. We are tentatively planning our orientation program, Greene 101, in August of 2021. Please plan on attending Greene 101 on August 17-20, 2021. Your child will be able to attend two of those days. We schedule this experience based on the team placement. Additionally, we will host a Get Connected to EHG Day on August 16, 2021. This is the day students and parents can come to the Greene School to pick up their chromebook, have their picture taken, drop off school supplies, and tour the school.
We look forward to seeing you this summer!

PTO NEWS.......
It is YEARBOOK TIME!
Looking to get involved in the PTO?
Put your talents to use for a noble cause: helping our students and teachers!
We are looking to fill two very important BAE PTO Executive Board positions for the 2021-2022 school year. We are searching for a new PTO President as our current President, Victoria Margroum, is 'graduating' and moving on to Greene School. The position of Treasurer will also be open as the current Treasurers are moving on to new endeavors. These positions could be filled by one person or a team working together. Our current President and Treasurers want anyone considering filling these positions to know that they are available to answer questions and give support next school year. Current and past members of the BAE PTO Executive Board really work together as a team to support new board members! Please contact Victoria Margroum at bapto@sycamoreschools.com with interest or questions.

2021 Yearbook
We’re hard at work on Blue Ash Elementary’s 2020-2021 Yearbook and we need your help!
Due to current restrictions, the yearbook team is unable to photograph day-to-day moments and special school events like we have been able to in the past. We still want to create a yearbook to commemorate this extraordinary year of Virtual and Face-to-Face learning, but we need your help gathering photos.
We’re looking for photographs capturing your student’s school year.
We encourage all BAE students, both Virtual and Face-to-Face, to send in photos.
Please send in photos keeping these requirements in mind:
• File size of at least 1 MB is best
• Send “original size,” if given the option
• Include only current BAE students in your photos
• Please include your student’s grade and learning style (VL or F2F) in the subject line of the email and list his/her first and last name and homeroom teacher in the body of the email.
For example:
To: bae.yearbook.2021@gmail.com
Subject: 1st grade, VL
Hello,
Here are pictures of John Smith in Mrs. Teacher’s
homeroom class.
• If you are submitting pictures of group activities like Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, please list all students’ first and last names and grade level.
**Please note: we do not include names/labels/captions on candid or group photos in the yearbook, but we must know who is included in the photos to be compliant with privacy practices.
• Email photos to: bae.yearbook.2021@gmail.com
We are excited to see your photos! The yearbook team will try to accommodate as many photos as possible while maintaining a balance between Virtual and Face-to-Face learners as well as a fair representation of all grade levels while working within layout and size restrictions.
Email photos or questions to: bae.yearbook.2021@gmail.com
Health and Wellness
Normally around this time of year, we would organize lunchtime food tastings for students for each grade. For the past few years, BAE kids have tasted different varieties of oranges and local apples, strawberry yogurt drinks, dried fruit, even seaweed and beet chips. The goal is to encourage kids to try new flavors and textures that are healthy and interesting in some way.
Since tastings aren't "on the menu" this year, let's try something different. The Edible Schoolyard Project is "dedicated to transforming the health of children by designing hands-on educational experiences in the garden, kitchen, and cafeteria that connect children to food, nature, and to each other."
This month, the Edible Schoolyard Project's focus is on flour: What is flour? Why are there so many types? What makes them different? If you’ve ever read a baking recipe that called for bread flour, cake flour, or unbleached flour and wondered any of those questions, this is your chance to learn all about flour!
Watch a farmer explain how to Process Wheat into Flour
Watch an overview of How Flour is Milled at a Plant
Color in the Anatomy of a Wheat Kernel
Bake! Create your own seasonal fruit muffin This recipe has lots of substitution options if there are allergies or if you would like to try out different combinations.
If your kid(s) enjoys any of these ideas, please take a picture and send it to evelynabeles@gmail.com and I'll post in a future SMORE. Also, if you have a wellness idea you’d like me to share, please let me know! Thanks, Evelyn Wagner, BAE PTO Health and Wellness
