Freedman's Bureau
The government created the freedmans bureau to help former slaves transition from being a slave to being a freedman. The bureaus job was to help set up schools and hospitals and distribute clothes, schools, fuel, and food in the south.
Welfare States
The freedman's bureau laid the ground for the "welfare state." The welfare state still exists today. People can go to the government for example food stamps or they can file for unemployment.
