Rockbrook Reminder

Rockbrook Elementary School's Weekly Updates | Aug 30, 2019

Thanks for Coming to Curriculum Night

Thanks to our many families that joined us on Curriculum Night this week, and to the Rockbrook Community Club who sponsored both pizza and supervision to help families be able to attend. We had more than 130 adults come to learn about the year ahead and ask questions.

We know schedules are busy so if you weren't able to attend, we are providing links to materials that were handed out. After reviewing, please reach out to your child's teacher if you have further questions.

Dining Out for Education

We are excited to present the slate of Dining Out Partners. Dining Out for Education Nights are great opportunities to call up friends, avoid the dishes, and meet new families. Most businesses donate back between 10% and 20% of your purchase to help support the school. Be sure to double-check too if the business uses TAGG.

Year Long Calendar Updates

We do our best to keep our Year Long Calendar the same throughout the year but occasionally need to make updates. Since this summer we've added our Dining Out Nights. Please exchange this updated copy with any older copies you may have at home.

Rockbrook Pick Up and Drop off Routines

Thank you for your help in making sure pick up and drop off works in an efficient and safe manner. Attached you'll find our pick up and drop off procedures. These are great to share with grandparents, friends, and relatives that might be picking your child up. We've also noticed that traffic is backed up if people park immediately across from the entry / exit to the parking lots. To keep things running smoothly please help us by not parking in those areas.

Rockbrook Music Programs Note

Hello Bulldog Parents and Guardians!

Things are off to a great start in the music room this year. I’m so energized by your childrens’ love of musical learning. As I start my second year here at Rockbrook, I’m confident their musical skills will only continue to grow! As we hit the ground running, I want to make you aware of our program dates. As usual, all of our music programs with the exception of Kindergarten and the 6th grade vocal music festival will be at the Performing Arts Center at Westside Middle School. Since these events are academic, I ask that all students attend their designated programs except in the case of illness or family emergency. Our kiddos work diligently on their performances and I know they will be excited to perform for you. Below are the dates.

5-6 Grade: Thursday, November 14 @ 7:00PM

3-4 Grade: Thursday, March 19 @ 7:00PM

1-2 Grade: Thursday, May 7 @ 7:00PM

6th Grade Vocal Music Festival: Tuesday, March 31 @ 7:00PM, Westside High School Gymnasium

Kindergarten: Thursday, April 30th @ 2:40PM, Rockbrook Gymnasium

Please contact me if you have any questions. I’m invested in the musical success and growth of your children!

With Joy,

Mr. Pribnow

Westside High School Sporting Event Attendance

We continue to ask for your help ensuring elementary and middle school students have parent accompaniment and supervision at Varsity sporting events, specifically football games. In years past, safety concerns have developed regarding unsupervised, younger students at these events, especially when they loiter in the parking lot, in the dark, more than 30 minutes after the game. In addition: no footballs or backpacks can be brought into the games.

Whether home or away, please plan for a parent to accompany your child if they want to attend a game. Thank you for your help!

Visitors and Volunteers - Please Check In

We love the fact that parents and family want to help and contribute to our school. If you will be volunteering at Rockbrook, please make sure to check-in at the office and receive a visitor badge. This includes if you are coming at morning arrival. All guests in our building after 8:40 need to have a visitor badge as part of our safety and security procedures. This helps staff and students know that you have checked in.

Lunch Accounts

Please be aware of your child’s lunch account balance. If you need assistance adding money or setting up a MySchoolBucks account, please contact Ms. Veldhuis. Cash and check can be sent to school and added to the account at the office. Many times the emails with notification of negative balances go to your spam mailbox.

If you are free and reduced, your status stays for 30 days after school starts. You need to add any new children to your application and re-apply each year if you haven’t received notification this summer. Any balances prior to approval are still your balance to be paid. Application is available on our district website under links.

After School Plans

Approving a Child to Go Home with Another Child's Parent:

In the event that you would like to approve your child to go home with another child's parent we need contact from both you and the other child's parent. This can be in the form of a note, email, or phone call to the office. Staff will not dismiss your child to another child's parent without prior contact, preferably to the main office so that this can be communicated to others (Classroom Teacher, Club66, etc).

Rockbrook Outdoor Classroom

The Rockbrook Outdoor Classroom Project was initiated in 2018 as a goal for Rockbrook Community Club’s Read-A-Thon Fundraiser. This fundraiser encourages families and friends to pledge funds in recognition of additional time and focus given by students to the importance of reading.

Funds were raised during the spring of 2018 and 2019 in order to meet cost estimates of the project.

Two Rockbrook Alumni and Westside Parents, Tom Wehling of Bigg Dogg Yard and Home Services and Brent Newman of Newman Lawn and Landscaping, contributed their time and expertise to complete the construction of a large stone sitting area behind the building.

Beginning this school year teachers will be able to bring up to two classes out at a time to enjoy the space, as well as availability for use by after school clubs and community groups that meet at the school.

A special thanks to all who contributed their support to this space, which will be enjoyed for years to come.

Meet Our Rockbrook Team - Administrative Assistant Ms. Veldhuis

Hi, I’m Ms. Veldhuis. This is my 3rd school year with Rockbrook. Before I worked at Rockbrook I was in the Beauty Industry for 20 years. I’m originally from Nebraska but I did some exploring early on and lived in Minneapolis, San Diego, and England. I have a degree in Business Administration. I have 2 daughters, they both go to Prairie Lane. My oldest is in the 6th grade and my youngest attends the pre-school. When I’m not at Rockbrook, I’m searching Netflix for my next favorite show. I’ve never met a piece of chocolate or a cardigan I didn’t like. I love coming to Rockbrook every day and seeing the kids and getting to know all the families.

Westside MTSS - Multi-Tiered System of Supports

Westside Community Schools continues the implementation of MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

What is MTSS? MTSS is a process of providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children. Individual children’s progress & skills are monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. The MTSS process is flexible and designed to meet the needs of all students. This process allows for a continuum of support based entirely on students’ individual needs. This support may be provided in a small group by the classroom teacher or other support staff, either within or outside the classroom.

What does this mean for my child? A key component of the MTSS process is that all children receive high quality instruction in their classroom. Universal screenings are used to review the progress of all students and are given three times per year. As a result of the screening, students may be identified as needing supplemental intervention in addition to instruction they are receiving in their classroom. If your child is identified as needing intervention you will receive notification. Please contact your child’s building principal with questions.

Nebraska Reading Improvement Act The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act became law in 2018 and will go into effect the 2019-2020 school year. The goal is that all Nebraska students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. The Nebraska READS initiative emphasizes the need for kindergarten through third grade students to have access to high-quality instruction and for struggling readers to receive targeted support. Our current MTSS structure in Westside Community Schools already allows for us to meet these requirements.
