The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - October 31, 2021
A Note from Principal Welch
What a beautiful weekend we have had thus far and what an incredible difference from a few days ago. It was so nice to get outside a bit to rake up leaves yesterday and take my dog for a walk. I am a lover of the sunshine, even on a crisp fall day. I hope you have found some joy this weekend yourself. For those of you who celebrate, Happy Halloween! I hope each of our students and families has a fun day and a fun and safe evening. If you have purchased candy or you are out gathering it and you have unwanted Halloween candy, our PTA will be collecting any unwanted candy Tuesday-Friday this coming week for Treats for Troops. You can read a bit more about this below. Lastly, we do ask that you watch how much candy might be sent to school as part of a student's lunch. Eating a lot of candy can often result in a "sugar crash" at school and sometimes includes a visit to the nurse.
I want to thank the 34 people who responded to the survey I added to last week's newsletter to gather how frequently you would like to receive my newsletters. Over 61% of those who responded shared they would like the community newsletters to continue to arrive weekly. At this time, I will keep them coming to you weekly.
I ask that you do read the sections below carefully, as there is a lot of information. Information includes release times for parent-teacher conferences, submissions for our Veteran's Day virtual concert, PTA Dough Raiser, and an update from Mr. Wallinger, our school counselor, to name a few.
I also want to remind you all that Tuesday, November 2 is Election Day. I encourage you to practice your civic duty and vote.
Let's have a great week ahead!
Take Care,
~ Jen Welch, Principal

Bullying Information from Mr. Wallinger
Hello Cottage Lake Families,
October is National Bullying Prevention Month and so I wanted to provide you all with some information and resources so that you can further understand the importance of this work, and so you can help us prevent bullying at our school. First, I’d like to highlight some data from PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and the National Center for Educational Statistics:
One out of every five (20.2%) of students report being bullied
41% of students who reported being bullied at school indicated that they think the bullying would happen again.
Of those students who reported being bullied, 13% were made fun of, called names, or insulted; 13% were the subject of rumors; 5% were pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on; and 5% were excluded from activities on purpose.
The reasons for being bullied reported most often by students include physical appearance, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation.
Over the past week and in the coming weeks I will be visiting classrooms to talk with students about bullying prevention at our school, but you can help too! Talking with your children about bullying is a great way to reinforce the importance of preventing and reporting bullying at school.
Below you will find a list of helpful information and resources related to bullying prevention:
Wishing you and your family all the best,
Mr. Wallinger

FAA Airport Design Challenge
"Recently, I’ve been made aware of an outstanding opportunity for students from kindergarten through grade 12. They are being invited to replicate an actual airport in Minecraft with the help of experts from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)! “In order to educate and inspire students (K-12) to better understand airports and their leading role in the National Airspace System, the FAA is hosting another run of its Airport Design Challenge competition which utilizes Minecraft to help develop a model airport with all of the required airside elements. Individually or in small teams, participants will receive instruction from FAA experts who specialize in specific areas of the airport. With that information, students will research a local airport of their choosing and then recreate that airport in the virtual world of Minecraft!” You can learn more at this website. about Imagining the possibilities…"

School Board approves three funding measures
During the Oct. 11 meeting, the Northshore School Board voted to place three funding measures on the February 8, 2022 ballot.
These three measures continue our work to build better together: modernizing schools, sustaining technology, and increasing opportunities.
- The Educational Programs and Operations Levy (EP&O) and the Technology Levy are not new taxes, but renewals of funding measures that are set to expire this year. These two levies would continue to provide funding for critical staffing and programming that support all Northshore students.
- The Capital Projects Bond would replace an expiring bond and help us address our highest facility needs.
This fall and winter, we will be sharing more information about the proposed projects and how they support our students and District.
