For 8th Grade Parents/Guardians ONLY!
Now that we have entered the fourth quarter, we look forward to continued academic success and accomplishments. There are many activities during the 4th quarter that are specifically for 8th grade students including the 8th Grade Semi-formal Dance and the 8th Grade Picnic. In order to be eligible to attend these activities, you must submit this signed contract as well as meet the following criteria:
- No out of school suspensions or bus suspensions beginning April 4th, 2022
- Absences must not exceed 4.5 days from April 4th, 2022 through the date of the activity (excluding “Medicals” or legal subpoenas); 3 unexcused tardies to school will equal 1 unexcused absence.
- No more than one Level III (major) discipline referral beginning April 4th, 2022; four unexcused classroom tardies equals one Level III (major) referral.
- Must not be failing 4th quarter one week prior to the event. Any money paid will not be refunded if you become ineligible due to grades.
- Must not have any outstanding debts to school (library, damaged books/school property, lunch accounts, unreturned student laptops, etc.) at the time of the event.
The 8th Grade Picnic is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 14th at Milton M. Somers Middle School during the school day. The 8th Grade Dance is tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 10th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Milton M. Somers Middle School. Please make sure your child adheres to the dress code for the dance, which is indicated below.
In order for students to participate in both of these events, they must also turn in an 8th Grade Clearance Form which will be distributed to students in June.
8th Grade Semi-Formal Dance
The 8th Grade Dance is tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 10th from 7-9pm at Milton M. Somers Middle School. Students must be present in school on June 10th in order to attend the dance that evening. The 8th Grade Dance is a semi-formal dance, more like a high school homecoming than prom. Therefore, tuxedos, formal evening gowns, and limousines are strongly discouraged.
Outfits for the 8th Grade Dance should be semi-formal in nature. The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Code of Student Conduct rule #2 states: Garments may not be shorter than the middle of the thigh, defined as shoulders relaxed and arms straight down alongside the body where fingertips touch the thigh. Slits in the skirt may not rise more than two inches above fingertips.
The following guidelines should be adhered to when shopping for 8th grade semi-formal dance attire (from CCPS Code of Student Conduct): Formal attire must not be disruptive or distracting. Spaghetti straps and strapless formal garments are acceptable as long as adequate coverage is maintained during the activity. Slits in skirts or other garments must meet the expectations for the same in rule #2 (above). Transparent attire is prohibited. Necklines may not fall below mid-sternum.
Backless garments or garments with sheer or cut-out bodices are not permitted at the 8th Grade Dance. Dress trousers are appropriate when worn with a dress shirt, tie (suit coat is optional), and dress shoes. Shirts must be tucked in. Athletic shoes and blue jeans are not appropriate semi-formal dance attire.
8th Grade Picnic
Attire must meet all guidelines as outlined in the CCPS Code of Student Conduct. Tennis shoes are encouraged for outdoor activities during the picnic.
Yearbook Information
8th Grade Proofs must be received by April 11th!
CCPS requires all students entering 9th grade to provide two (2) current proofs of domicile to update their child's record. Your child's schedule will not be finalized for the 2022-2023 school year until your proofs are received. Please see the attached letter regarding this process. Proofs may be uploaded through ParentVue, brought into the counseling office during school hours, or emailed to our guidance secretary, Mrs. Matos, at rmatos@ccboe.com. Proofs must be received no later than April 11, 2022.
Immunizations
Attention parents of current 6th graders:
There are two immunizations that your child will be required to receive before they enter the 7th grade (meningococcal MCV4 and Tdap). If your child has already received these immunizations at a recent well-visit, please send us a copy now so that it can be processed. If your child is due to receive them later this school year or over the summer, please request a copy during your visit to send to our nurse. Immunization records can be emailed to antaylor@ccboe.com, faxed to (301) 934-2982, or dropped off to the main office.
.................From the Library
Wow! Just Wow! Our first live book fair in over 2 years was a TREMENDOUS success! Students were super excited to be there and find new books to read and love (and a few cool pencils and erasers as well). In five and a half days, our book fair outperformed any prior book fair at Somers. We sold over $7,500 dollars worth of books and other items! Thanks to our Somers parents for your generous support of student reading. Because of your support, we will be able to add many new book titles to our school library to keep students reading!
Speaking of Reading – Are you doing some Spring Cleaning? If so, please help with our New to You Book Drive. The Somers Library would like to collect enough new and gently used books for every rising 6th and 7th grade student to leave school this year with a summer reading title in hand. We are looking for donations of books that are new or gently used, appropriate for middle school readers, and are engaging titles. Thanks to your book fair generosity, we have already begun collecting titles. Help us succeed by donating some more!
