The MOSAIC Project
2nd Quarter: 11/4/13 to 1/17/14
Our School Wide Book: Same, Same but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw
TeachingBooks.net offers wonderful web connection to both the book and the author! This can be accessed from school through the Library tab on the Oakridge website.
Book Description: Elliot lives in America, and Kailash lives in India. They are pen pals. By exchanging letters and pictures, they learn that they both love to climb trees, have pets, and go to school. Their worlds might look different, but they are actually similar. Same, same. But different!

Needed: "Electronic Pen Pal" Connections
As part of the MOSAIC lessons during 2nd quarter, Dawn hopes to pair up classrooms here at Oakridge with classrooms from around the world. To do this we will need to quickly build connections with schools who have access to computers and internet in other places. If you have any contacts, please let Dawn know ASAP!
Art Connection
The entire school will be participating in a unit titled "My Viewpoint/Perspective of Oakridge." Each grade will experience unique ways to capture their own "Big Idea" of Oakridge, such as: solar prints, 35 mm camera, digital cameras, and homemade pinhole cameras. Photographer, Chris Peregoy, will be working directly with the 5th grade. He will also host a school wide assembly. We hope to have our own Oakridge Photography Museum, perhaps at the Hume School. See Maria Burke for more information
Needed: International Literacy Connections
MOSAIC is planning to host an International Literacy event some time in early 2014. The idea is a hands-on event, similar to STEM Night, where students and families can move from station to station experiencing literacy from around the world. Examples include an Asian or Arabic calligraphy station(s) and folktale stations where students become involved in stories. Please email Dawn with connections and/or resources ASAP!!!!
