No School Tomorrow
Stay safe and warm out there!
District Statement
Dear Hillsboro School District Parents and Staff,
District administrators have been following local and national weather alerts indicating a winter storm tomorrow. It is hard to imagine, as the current weather is so clear and calm. However, the consistent messages from local and national weather services tell us that a strong winter storm will likely move in from the south overnight bringing accelerating cold winds, then snow and freezing rain. While the early morning hours may look clear, around mid-morning the snow and freezing rain are expected to arrive quickly.
Specific warnings include:
- Impacts to schools and businesses
- Potential for power interruptions
- Road conditions deteriorating rapidly
- Possibility of freezing rain later in the day
In response to this forecast, advice from regional and local authorities, and in consultation with surrounding districts, we made a decision for school to be closed tomorrow (Dec. 8). Please note that this is a district closure, meaning all schools and district facilities are closed, and that afternoon and evening activities and events are canceled.
It is unusual to make a weather closure decision in anticipation of an event. However, the timing of this storm's arrival is challenging. We believe it is best not to risk bringing in students and staff for a few hours of instruction in the morning only to then release them early to go home during the peak of a storm. We do not want to leave students and staff stranded, or take risks with transporting children in buses on icy roads. Student and staff safety is our first priority.
Our hope is that this early decision allows families the time to make necessary arrangements for tomorrow and demonstrates our commitment to the best interests of our children.
Thank you,
Mike Scott
Superintendent
