Counselor's Corner
Skyline Community,
I have accepted a position at Grant High School for the 2019-2020 school year. I want to thank you for the amazing four years I have spent at Skyline. My professional goal has always been to be a high school counselor, but I do not leave Skyline easily. Our school is special and I will be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to work with your amazing children.
Have a wonderful week,
Amy Gervais
School Counselor
IB Corner
This month we are focusing on our Learner Profile of being REFLECTIVE staff and students. To be REFLECTIVE:
“We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development”
Our next IB assembly will be on May 3rd at 8:45 am. Please keep a look out for your REFLECTIVE students!
At our staff meeting this past Tuesday the staff began our work on building a school wide year long plan. Each grade level sat down with their reading and writing units and standards and aligned that portion of their teachings with their IB Planners. As an IB school, our IB curriculum spans across all areas of academics and ties everything together. For example, if the class is doing an inquiry unit on habitats, then they might also be doing a informational writing piece on a habitat and reading non- fiction text on specific animal habitats bringing in all literacy and writing standards that need to be addressed as well as appropriate assessments that tie to the overall learning objectives. I am very excited with all the work that the teachers have put into creating these year long plans and aligning their planners. They have done a lot of work this year and I am looking forward to all the work that lies ahead of us as well. Next year we begin our Self Study process for our IB authorization. There is a lot of work that goes into this process and much of the work that we are doing now is helping us prepare for it!
Mark your calendars!!
May 16th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Testing
We have now finished our 2nd week of testing. I couldn’t be more proud of our students for all the focus and attention they are putting into their tests!
This week the 5th grade students worked on their Science test and the 3rd grade students worked on their English Language Arts test. We have a break in the schedule for next week as we will allow time for all students who have not finished either test the time needed to finish. There is not a time limit on the test so students are allowed to take all the time that they need. The next testing week will be May 6 - 10. During that week the 3rd grade students as well as the middle school students will take their Math test. Middle School will follow the same testing schedule as before and 3rd grade will test from 9:30 - 10:30 each day.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Skyline Foundation
At Back to School night the Foundation and the PTA stated a fund-raising goal for the year of $135,000 dollars. It was an ambitious goal, it was an audacious goal, and while many of you fell out of your seats when we unveiled the number, we knew that working together as a school, we could do it.
Well, Skyline, give yourselves a pat on the back! As of March 31, 2019 the Foundation and the PTA (meaning ALL of YOU) have succeeded in raising a gross total of $150,000!!!!!!
We sincerely thank you for writing cheques at the beginning of the year, coming to all the PTA fundraisers, coming to the auction, pledging recurring donations, getting matches for those donations, shopping at Fred Meyer and through Amazon Smile, and submitting your volunteer hours for our school. Every dollar counted. Every dollar helped.
Skyline, you are AWESOME! You never cease to amaze and you never let our kids down.
Take a moment when you are at the school and check out the Feed the Eagle sign. It is a wonderful sight to see that we reached and surpassed our fundraising goal!
Our next step will be to reconcile expenses from the auction and Skyline’s contribution to the PPS Equity Fund to determine the net proceeds that we will use for teachers and enrichment for our kids.
Until then, know that YOUR contribution helped to reach our goal and more!
Sincerely,
Your friendly neighborhood Foundation and PTA
Move for the Arts
We would like to thank our amazing Art Liason, Shannon Garcia- Shinn, for sharing her talents and dedication to our Skyline students and staff. For the 2019-20 school year, we will be saying good-bye to Shannon as she moves on to spread her talents into working with adults and pursuing other avenues in art. If you are interested in the Art Liason position, please reach out.
Our annual Move for the Arts FUNdraiser and field day are right around the corner. FUNdraising forms will be coming home after April 19 and field day is May 17.
Also, we are trying to reduce waste and encourage children to reuse their Franz water bottles from last years MFA.
Please send them to school with your children if you still have them.
We are reaching out to families with business connections who would be able to help contribute. In particular, we are looking for support of a large number of small prizes for attaining fundraising levels. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution of in-kind items. If you are interested in business sponsorship, please let us know at fpstudioschool@gmail.com. We would be happy to discuss what would work for you.
Because of the generosity of Skyline families for our fundraising efforts, our annual Move for the Arts FUNdraiser, we are able to fund both our visual art program and field day event with this single effort. Community support from businesses provides fundraising prizes, volunteers for our event and services, such as photography and sponsorship. Your support is vitally important, and we are so grateful to you.
Happiness is … Letting Someone Else Do the School Supply Shopping
PTA’s School Supply Fundraiser is here!
This year we have partnered with the Teacher Tailored supply kit program to offer pre-packaged, school supply kits filled with the exact supplies requested by your child’s teacher. Why fight the hassle of retail when our kits are a cost-effective and convenient way of purchasing your back-to-school supplies? An order form to should have come home with your child prior to April 12. The form includes instructions to order online at www.shopttkits.com with account #67223 or you can return the paper form to the office. All orders need to be received by April 29.
Please note that the school supply fundraiser was set up prior to the new grade configuration announcement. Chris Sugura was kind enough to create new paper order forms that reflect single grade classrooms in grades K-3 for the 2019-20 school year. However, we are unable to change the online ordering system without confusing the warehouse where the orders will be fulfilled. If you order supplies online for children entering second or third grades, you will need to choose “Skyline 2nd-3rd Grade.” The supply lists are the same for both second and third grades, so how you order will not affect the quality of supplies your child receives.

Gym & Cafeteria
Family Engagement STEM Night is NEXT Wednesday, May 1, from 6-8 p.m.! There will be 20+ hands-on activities in the gym thanks to an awesome group of Skyline parents and Intel volunteers. We’ll have activities for all ages and grades. Parents and guardians are asked to accompany their kids from activity to activity, experiencing and learning about science, technology, engineering and math, together.
And, don’t worry about feeding your kids beforehand! We’ll have a potluck dinner in the cafeteria throughout the evening. If you signed up to bring something or help at the originally-scheduled event in February, please confirm that you’re still able to do the same next Wednesday.
If you haven’t yet signed up to bring a food item to share, or to help before, during or after the event, please do so, here:

I’m in desperate need of assistance with setting up the gym! If you can arrive at anytime between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., please let me know! The more people who help, the faster setup will go. I look forward to seeing everyone next week!
Warmly,
