Schedule Changes: The counselors and administrators have been receiving numerous emails and phone messages about students wanting to change their schedules. As a reminder, the following was sent out when students chose their courses last spring. (This is also posted in the LTHS Course Catalog). Staffing for the 2022-23 school year was based on those course selections. In addition, like many schools around the country, we are still trying to hire teachers. So, please be patient as you follow the guidelines below.
SCHEDULE CHANGE GUIDELINES
Changing a course requires discussion with family and the counseling department since changes can impact learning, long term success, and future college goals. Students are expected to use all possible resources available to them before considering a course level change, such as completing all assignments, tutoring, and conferencing with the teacher. “Teacher changes” (requesting a different teacher for the same course) will not be honored unless the student has failed a course with the teacher previously. Schedule changes requests will be approved ONLY IF space is available in the level change course requested. Please note that schedule changes may change class and lunch periods as well as teachers.
FIRST 10 DAYS OF SCHOOL
All students must remain in the classes on their schedule for the first 10 days of school. This allows students the opportunity to attend each class 5 times prior to making any decisions about appropriate placement in a class. Additionally, this time gives teachers a chance to gauge student ability and chances for success in the course. Teacher initiated level changes will be honored during the first 10 days of school ONLY IF space is available.
AFTER FIRST 10 DAYS OF SCHOOL
Beginning on August 29, students can begin to complete the schedule change form for level changes only (SEE APPENDIX). Course changes are not permitted. Students must complete the form, with parent and teacher signatures, and return it to the counseling office by September 9, 2022.
EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES
Extenuating circumstances forms are available for students who have had circumstances that have become a barrier to a student’s success in the class and the deadline to complete a schedule change has passed. These requests require approval from the Associate Principal for Curriculum and Instruction (SEE APPENDIX)
SECOND SEMESTER
Schedule changes for level changes occur again during the first two weeks of the second semester. Students will need to complete the schedule change form, including parent and teacher signatures, and submit the form to the counseling office by January 13, 2023.
