Reader's Workshop
This month, our whole class has been reading Follow My Leader. It is about a boy who gets blinded by a firecracker. So he gets a guide dog named Leader to help him see. Here is the back to help you understand:
After Jimmy was blinded by a firecracker he has to relearn all the things he used to know. How to get dressed, how to find his way around the house, even how to eat. With the help of a determined therapist, he learns to read Braille, and use a white cane. Then he’s given the chance to have a guide dog. Learning to work with leader is not easy, but Jimmy tries harder than he ever has before. Can Leader really give him the ability and the confidence he needs?
Last week we had to read chapters 4-9 in 6 days. In the first chapter, it tells you how he got blinded, him in the hospital, and him getting unwrapped around his face. There was gauze wrapped around his face and when the gauze came off he thought it was still on. It was kind of sad! Then, we were reading chapters 10-15! In 6 days too! In chapter 10 and 1, Jimmy goes to guide dog school and he gets his dog while he is there after a while. He doesn’t like the name Siris, but jimmy does like the name Siris. So he wants Leader. Because Siris was the name of a Roman God's dog and he was a follower, but jimmy is the follower and Siris is the leader so he wants Leader for his name. Hopefully you are interested in the book Follow My Leader. Our class is very interested in this book!
Writer's Workshop
This month in writing, we worked on writing an informational book on the American Revolution. It is really fun. Our book consists of 4 or more chapters. The required chapters are - All about the American Revolution, All about your Focus Topic, a narrative about your topic, and an essay on your topic. Some Ideas Owen is thinking about are Saratoga.
Abby’s topic is The Battle of Bunker Hill. An interesting fact about The Battle of Bunker Hill is, it took place at Breed's' Hill, which is located on the Charleston Peninsula... isn’t that funny? So that's what we're learning about in writing this month. We've also watched this video called, Revolutionary War in 9 Minutes to help us refresh our memory.OUR WRITING CELEBRATION IS ON JUNE 8TH FROM 2:00-3:00. DON'T MISS IT!
Math
In math, we finished Unit 7 before PARCC and then after PARCC, we took an open notebook quiz. It's a test basically based on everything in Unit 7. You do not use a study guide. It is freehand and you should use your math notebook for studying. It was hard for me but maybe not for someone else. The test was long and we did okay, but then we started Unit 8 which was really tricky! Mrs. Kaubin said we are the only class that got to Unit 8, so that's cool! Our last math homework will be on May 31st!
Science
This month in science we have been learning how light waves travel and how mirrors work. Mirrors work by reflecting the the light that comes off of whatever they are facing. For example when the sun puts light on you, the mirror picks it up. Then you can see your reflection in the mirror. However, if you were to use a mirror in the dark, it would not work that efficiently. We did flashlight challenges. We had to reflect light from mirror to mirror to make a mirror maze. We used flashcards to keep in the light. After this, we did a solar panel experiment where we used light to produce energy to a motor. Then we talked about sustainable forms of energy and Mrs. Kaubin told us if we wanted a good job later in life we should start to learn about wind energy and water energy. Then we switched units, and we did an experiment where we acted like the food chain. We got put in groups where we were either were producers (plants), primary consumers (crickets) or secondary consumers (hawks). We threw out little cubes that acted as the producers/plants. The primary consumers eat the producers, then the smaller secondary consumers ate the frog. Then the frogs eat the crickets. After, the hawk eats the frog. Then, we talked about how food chains work. We think this was our last science lesson but we really loved science this year!
Social Studies
In Social Studies we have been traveling the Southwest region. The four states in the Southwest are Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. We have noticed in those states that they are in the sun belt! That’s why they are so hot! Here are some facts. In Phoenix, Arizona 100 years ago Phoenix was small but now it is a very big city. In San Antonio, Texas there was a great battle called the Alamo. In Oklahoma City it is called the "Sooner State" because you had to get there soon to get a good piece of land. And finally in New Mexico there is a border between the U.S and Mexico is a river called Rio Grande. Then we had our states and capitals test. You have to label the states in each region. Then you have to draw a line to the state capital. It was long but it was easy.
#GDD18 - Global Day of Design
This month in school, we have been working on many things. One activity we did was called the Global Day Of Design. It’s where a bunch of schools around the world participate in a very fun event. The teachers choose an object to make, and everyone in the class tried to create it and make it work. It teaches children to make mistakes and learn from it. It also teaches cooperation and teamwork, following along with creativity. Our class made roller coasters out of straws, tape, and ping pong balls to go down the track and into a cup. Everybody made a roller coaster in different shapes and sizes. One group made a straight down roller coaster, one made a twisty one, and one made a very high one. This week was very fun doing these fun activities!
THANK YOU MR. SCHAEFFER FOR ALL OF OUR CARDBOARD!!!!
Ellis Island Field Trip
Dear 4K parents,
On the 30th of May we went to Ellis Island!!! We went on a bus ride for 2 hours. Then we got to Ellis Island and we learned. We learned about the people that immigrated and came to Ellis Island. We learned that if someone had mental problems the people had to put a X on their back. Also if the immigrants lied about themselves they had to go to court. Once we were on the ferry, we passed the Statue of Liberty. There were a lot of people on Lady Liberty. We had a lot of fun in Ellis Island!
Grandfriend's Day
This month in fourth grade has been fun. Grand Friend’s day is coming up (yay) It is on May 25th 2018, it is when you bring in your Grandparents, neighbors, or adults in your life. They can watch how well we do in school. They can see the work we do in school, and if we behave well or not. Then, they can either talk to us about how we can improve or what we are doing well and give us a compliment. Not only grandparents are coming but a student can bring in a grown-up friend too. Like if your neighbor’s kids are all in college it would be nice for you to bring them in. When the grandparents come in we will give them a survey with questions like when were you born or what was your favorite subject? Then, we did a Kahoot about the USA! The day was really fun. After all, grandfriends are great! Hope you will be there!
