6 Things You Need to Know And Can Share with Others
December 16, 2019
1. PhD Science: Family Tip Sheet
With each module you can send home a Family Tip Sheet that outlines the module concepts
and includes ideas on how you can support your student at home. The goal of these
suggestions is to help students see science everywhere and not just at school. Talking
about science, watching science videos, or visiting a museum, park, or zoo are all ways
to support our students' learning.
You can find the Family Tip Sheets in the Resources and Materials- PhD Science Google Folder.

3. Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the nation’s highest honors for teachers of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science, have opened their 2019–2020 nomination and application cycle for K–6th grade teachers. PAEMST are awarded annually to exceptional K–12 educators throughout the nation, alternating each year between K–6th and 7th–12th grades. The 2019–2020 nomination deadline is March 1, 2020, and the application deadline is May 1, 2020, so consider nominating a talented teacher using the PAEMST website today!

4. Santa's Sleigh Is Girl Powered!
First, reindeer (also called caribou) are real animals.
A male reindeer drops his antlers in November, leaving him without antlers until the following spring, while female reindeer keep their antlers through the winter until their calves are born in May.
This fact has led many to believe that, based on the presence of antlers, Santa's reindeer must be female to have those antlers on Christmas Eve! What a phenomenal fact!

5. Sci-Port Admissions Assistance
Sci-Port has funds available to Caddo Parish schools through ACT10 funding from the state.
How to Apply: Make a reservation first through reservations@sciport.org. There will be a page that pops up for admissions assistance after the reservation is made. A statement of need is required, along with an agreement to complete a short survey at the end of the field trip.
Notes:
1. The old ACT2 admissions assistance forms from last year are NOT valid.
2. What's available: general admission/POP, IMAX, and Sno-Port. Please note that Sno-Port requires special scheduling and may be limited.
3. Admissions assistance is valid until May 30 or when funding runs out, whichever is first.
6. LEAP 2025 Science Stimuli Review Committees
The Department is now recruiting participants for LEAP 2025 science assessment stimuli review committees. Committee participants, representing a variety of perspectives, will review stimuli to ensure the materials that will be used to develop an item and task sets are fair and appropriate for all students and will allow an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in science.
Stimuli review committees are convening in two locations on different dates to accommodate and reduce travel for participants from the north and central Louisiana. Any interested teachers and content supervisors should complete an interest survey, linked below.
- Baton Rouge, January 27: Grade 4 Science, Grade 6 Science
- Bossier City, January 29: Grade 4 Science, Grade 6 Science
Please do not sign up for both locations, as committees will be reviewing the same content.
Please note that participants will not be reimbursed for travel expenses, meals, or lodging. Input from educators is critical to sound assessment development and support in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. The survey closes on December 20, 2019. Selected participants and alternates will be notified in early January.
