Carkenord Chronicle
January 2023
Principal's Message
January is often a time when people set new goals for themselves. This year, our students have been working to set individual goals for their learning. Students are tracking their assessment data in data notebooks and using that data to set goals. Their teachers are also helping them to create action steps that will help them be successful in reaching those goals. Be sure to ask your child about his/her goals that they are working on.
This month all students will again be taking the NWEA assessment. This is a tool that we use to monitor student growth. Students in grades K-5 will be assessed in reading and math. Parents will receive the results at mid-marking time in the beginning of February.
Watch DOGS
Attention Carkenord male role models…we are looking for you to be a Watch “DOG” during the 2022-23 school year! Watch D.O.G.S. is a nationally recognized program whose goal includes providing male role models for our students during the school day. Our goal at Carkenord is to invite any special male role models (dads, grandpas, uncles, stepdads) to our school for one day to be a Watch DOG on Wednesdays throughout the school year during the lunch and recess time blocks. The Watch DOG won’t only spend time with his own student(s), but will also spend time making connections with other students in the cafeteria and on the playground.
If you’re thinking you’d like to sign up for the program, please do the following things:
- Complete a LCPS required Volunteer Form (attached pdf file) and return to school ASAP. A new volunteer form must be on file each school year.
- Use this Sign Up Genius link to choose one date slot that works for you to be a Watch DOG at Carkenord from 11:00 a.m.-1:35 p.m. Please only sign up for one day during this first sign up block to allow the opportunity for all to participate. Additional slots will be set out in the near future. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C4AAFAD2FA7FF2-watch4
- Arrive at Carkenord on your scheduled day at 11:00 a.m. and sign in at the front office and you will be directed to the cafeteria to begin your rotations.
- You are welcome and invited to bring a lunch/water bottle to eat with your student(s) during their designated lunch time.
- Please dress for the weather as students will go outside for recess (weather dependent).
Should you have any additional questions, please email Sarah Krug at krugsa@lc-ps.org
