How and Why they Form
How ions form
Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses electrons and gets charged. If an atom gains electrons, number of electrons exceed from the number of proton and hence an atom gets negatively charged.
Similarly if an atom looses electrons the total number of protons become more than the number of electrons.. and the atom becomes positively charged.
Similarly if an atom looses electrons the total number of protons become more than the number of electrons.. and the atom becomes positively charged.
Why Ions Form
Ions form when an atom gains or loses electrons. Atoms do this because they are not stable unless they have a full outer orbital. When they gain or lose electrons they will have a positive or negative charge due to the imbalance of protons and electrons.
Types of Ions
Anions are negatively charged ions. Anions are negatively charged because there are more electrons associated with them than there are protons in their nuclei.
Cations are positively charged ions. Cations are the opposite of anions, since cations have fewer electrons than protons. Dianion: a dianion is a species which has two negative charges on it; for example, the aromatic dianion pentalene. Radical ions: radical ions are ions that contain an odd number of electrons and are mostly very reactive and unstable.
How to Determine the Charges of Ions
The charge the atom incurs will depend on the electrons in the valence shell. Oxygen for example has 6 valence electrons. In order to reach 8 it must gain 2 electrons. This will leave it with a -2 charge since it will now have two more negatively charged electrons than its 6 positively charged protons
