MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
We have had an exciting week here at Fairview! Thank you to all families who came out for our Winter Singalong last evening. It was so wonderful to hear our Fairview choruses perform and to then have a chance to all sing together and enjoy a winter evening outside as a community! Special thanks to our Fairview PTO for making the event more festive by selling hot chocolate and donuts and providing the tea lights for our students. Thanks also to former Fairview parent and community member, Alex Kanaris, for donating the sound and light equipment and his services to allow our students to be best seen and heard. Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs. Happ for organizing this event and helping inspire students with a love of music! Earlier this week, we surprised our students with a mix-it-up at lunch day on Wednesday and allowed them the chance to have some free choice seating for the day rather than sitting with just their homeroom classmates. The students enjoyed the chance to eat with friends in other homerooms and we hope to allow them this opportunity various times throughout the year. When you have a moment read below for some updates from me and be sure to check out the entire newsletter below for more information. Have a nice weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Erin’s Law Presentations: On Monday, December 12th and Tuesday, December 13th, Fairview students will participate in a 30 minute presentation delivered by Katherine Ciruelas, Fairview School Social Worker, to educate them in an age-appropriate way about the topic of childhood sexual abuse. These valuable presentations will teach students more about personal safety, safe vs. unsafe touches, safety steps to follow if someone breaks the touching rule, and good secrets vs. bad secrets. All District 57 schools will participate in these presentations once again this school year in compliance with Erin’s Law, which mandates education about sexual abuse prevention for public school children in Illinois. All students will be included in the sexual abuse prevention programs unless a parent or guardian contacts me via email or phone to request that their child not participate (dophus@d57.org, 847-394-7320 x4012). Please do not hesitate to contact me or Ms. Ciruelas (kciruelas@d57.org), if you have any follow up questions.
Fairview Giving Tree: Thank you to all families who signed up to participate in our annual Fairview Giving Tree to help families in need. We are so grateful for your kindness and generosity! Just a reminder that all wrapped gifts are due back at Fairview no later than Monday, December 19th so we have time to prepare them for pick up. Please put a note on each gift to indicate the family number and gift description to help make sure each gift is delivered to the right family. Thank you again for participating and making a Fairview family’s holiday season even brighter!
DECEMBER FALCONS READ! EVENT
Please contact Jessica Talbot (jtalbot@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of this flyer or any other flyer that appears in the newsletter.
IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM NURSE BRUNNING
In order to prevent the spread of germs, it is important that any student who vomits, has diarrhea, or has a fever be kept home for at least 24 hour after the symptoms end. They must be 24 hours free of these symptoms without the use of medication to relieve the symptom. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact Kelly Brunning.

DRESS FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat and snowpants.
All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.
STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS
