A Message from the PE Teachers:
As we approach spring break, we want you to know what is coming up during the last quarter of the school year for PE. Please check out our PE website at the link below to see what your child has done in PE throughout the school year!

· Saturday April 22 is Earth Day, so in PE that week we will play fun games related to earth day and watch some BrainPOP videos on natural resources and reuse, reduce, recycle.
· Saturday April 22 is the 1-Mile Run for Healthy Living Race for 5th grade students! The winning school will receive funding to use for supplies and other necessary items needed for classrooms! No registration fee – it’s FREE – registration begins at 7am on April 22nd and the race will begin at 8am. Race to be held at Carteret Community College Campus!
· Saturday April 22 is also the Color Run at Croatan High School hosted by Croatan Athletic Boosters Club and the Croatan HS Cross Country/Track & Field teams. Their goal for this event is to celebrate the idea of having fun, while being fit, and supporting high school athletics through the Croatan Athletic Boosters Club. $30 per person and that includes a T-shirt if you register by April 12.
o White shirts are the standard uniform for any color run. They will be including a white t-shirt for all registrations before April 12, 2023. You are not limited to the standard white t-shirt. Feel free to add in crazy socks, tutus, hats, etc... Register at this link https://runsignup.com/cougarcolorrun ($30 per person)
· Monday April 24 - Friday April 28 is Every Kid National Healthy Week - an observance that aims to spread awareness regarding the health of children. We will continue to engage and help inspire students to pursue a lifetime of fitness-related activities and healthy decisions.
· For our students in grades 3-5, we will finish up fitness testing in quarter 4; the mile, push-ups, curl-ups, pacer test, sit & reach, trunk lift, & the shuttle run. Students that pass the components from the FITNESSGRAM, with their scores being in the top 85th percentile for their age, will be recognized as making the Wildcat Fitness Club.
· For our students in grades 4-5, we will discuss the Heimlich Maneuver. This introduction of the Heimlich Maneuver will be a short lesson of when and how to perform the maneuver. Nurse Pam will assist us in going over prevention from choking, recognition of someone else choking, calling 9-1-1 and getting help, and trying your best to stay calm during this type of situation. Teaching the Heimlich Maneuver is part of the NC Health and PE Standards for 4th grade, so we will review it for 5th grade.
· On Friday May 5, the early release day from school, we will have the Emerald Isle Ocean Rescue Coordinator, Mr. William Matthias at WOES to discuss water safety with our students. On this date, Mr. Matthias will talk to the children about being safe on the beach and in the ocean and other bodies of water, as well as what the town’s official beach warning flags represent. Mr. Matthias oversees the Ocean Rescue Program through the Emerald Isle Fire Department, which employs 20 USLA-certified (United States Lifesaving Association) lifeguards that are on the beach strand from April 1 through September to best serve the public. He will give an in-depth look at the beach warning flags, and will explain that Emerald Isle, and the other towns on Bogue Banks, do not fly green flags, since there are always inherent dangers when swimming in the ocean, and it is never completely safe. It is important to always use caution and to respect the ocean, in addition to paying attention to the beach warning flags and talking to lifeguards about how to remain safe while enjoying the beach. As of last year, the four towns along Bogue Banks produced official beach safety videos together as another piece of the town’s rigorous beach safety messaging. With summer approaching we want all of our students to always think and practice safety when around bodies of water in our beautiful area.
· WOES is hosting another blood drive on Tuesday June 13 from 10:30 – 4:30. If you would like an appointment, please contact Wesley Pearson at wesley.pearson@carteretk12.org
