D is for Dinosaurs
June 27 - July 29: Explore Session 2
Wow! Three weeks down and what a busy three weeks it has been!
We have been working on three categories of learning:
Math - We have been been sorting by attributes, copying and creating patterns, and learning about/sorting shapes based on the number of sides and corners. We have also been using Dreambox to practice greater than/less than and making sets of ten. Those ten frame activities have then been a focus of our white board work as well. We have been reading books to practice counting as well. A great home goal would be to work on numbers up to 20: identifying and counting.
Literacy - All the students have started their journeys on the Chrome books. They have signed in and have been assigned Chrome books to use on a regular basis. When using these, they are accessing Canvas which is a SPS "all in one computer shop." They are currently using it to sign into Lexia and work on letter recognition, rhyming, letters sounds, etc.. We are working on Letterland letter recognition, writing their names and other letter activities.
Project Based Learning - In the case of our class, our projects have been science based. The kiddos have learned about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. They can sort dinosaurs based on body types and teeth and what type of eater they were. They have learned about habitats and the 4 things all animals need: water, food, shelter and space. We will be applying that knowledge next week as we start talking about specific dinosaurs. They have made some great connections to what they already know about animals and they are proving to be great scientists.
I am amazed at how much we are learning and know that this investment of time during the summer is going to make a huge impact on their entire year in kindergarten.
Snacks: We are running low on snacks and if you are able to send snacks in for our students it would be much appreciated. We are running about 16 students.
