Weekly Bulletin - November 29th, 2019
An Advent Prayer for The Lord to Come
Fill me with Your presence from the very start.
As I prepare for the holidays and gifts to be given,
Remind me of the gift You gave when You sent Your Son from Heaven.
Amen
Activities in the OLMP community this week!
This week we prepared for the start of Advent with our annual Advent Wreath Ceremony headed by our school Chaplin's Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Petiot. This was followed by our Student of the month assembly. For more information on Advent click here and if you are wanting ways to prepare your household for Advent click here for 3 simple tips.
The assembly ended with a celebration of student athletics and the debut of our new OLMP Dance Team! The group is big and growing even more after their opening performance. If you are interested in joining the group come out to our next practice and contact high school student leader Jill Shapka at school or though email 613531@eics.ab.ca . We were also able to celebrate great students in our school. See the link below to see all the students recognized. We had two winners this month Nicole Rohr and Adrianna Forre.
Nicole was nominated for her amazing personality! She always helps others with her good will. She is very kind, honest and respectful to everyone! Nicole is overall a wonderful person! These traits are noticed by many people in OLMP!
Adrianna was nominated for the work she does in and around the school. Adrianna takes photos at almost every event the school hosts with a willing heart. She has a smile that lights up the room and she’ll always say hi to you down the hallway. Adrianna's behind the scenes work in photography really makes the school a better place!
This week at OLMP we also had students away at Skills Exploration days and had a neon 80's day that was lots of fun and then the week ended with a very busy Taco in a Bag lunch organized by our International Club in celebration of Mexico. The club will be recognizing a different country each month!
Our athletic director Mr. Popowich also arranged our traditional student vs teachers volleyball game were all the students come down to the gym to cheer on the players and teachers as the teachers compete against each of our volleyball teams and continued their streak going undefeated! Then Thursday after school High school leaders had their annual wake-a-thon where they successfully raised $2621.40 that they will use in their work with the homeless in the months to come along with other student leadership activities. $1000 of which goes directly to buying food for the meal they will prepare and serve at the Mustard Seed Church downtown Edmonton later in January.
There was also lots of great curricular projects going on in classrooms including the grade 6's creating projects about the planets and fun creatures that lived on each planet. They also were busy in option classes like Art creating final paintings in their last classes before they rotated to new classes.
OLMP Students at NCYC
Some of our high school students recently traveled to Indianapolis for NCYC. The National Catholic Youth Conference, frequently referred to as NCYC, is a three-day event for Roman Catholic youth. NCYC is held in U.S. cities every two years and organized in part by the host diocese of the city. The conference is organized by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. The mission of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) is to support and strengthen those who accompany young people as they encounter and follow Jesus Christ. If anyone is interested in a future trip they should connect with Mr. Murphy. See a fun photo of the Elk Island Catholic Students that attended this year!

Grade 7 Science Fair
All grade 7 students are participating in the Augustana Science Fair this semester! Their poster presentations are due December 2nd for 7B and December 3rd for 7A and 7C. Please touch base with your child to ensure their posters are complete. We will be practicing presentations in class and they will be marked in class at this time.
The actual field trip to Augustana Campus will be on December 12th. Students will present their experiments to a panel of judges, and participate in different activities around campus. More details to come about this exciting science opportunity! Stay tuned!
High School Seminar
An upcoming Seminar of interest to some is the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) information session on December 12th. The RAP program provides students with the opportunity to spend part of their school year completing high school diploma requirements and part of their year working as a registered apprentice in one of Alberta's 52 trades. After successfully completing related safety training and course work, students begin employment at an approved worksite, learning on the job and acquiring hours toward their journeyman's status. Students will also receive a wage from their employer. Students must complete grade 10 before starting a RAP placement but they can begin to apply for RAP in the second semester of grade 10. Students should have an interest in working with their hands and a willingness to learn new skills. Our employers want students that will show up on time and work hard. You can better your chances of getting a RAP placement by attending and passing all of your courses. Make sure you research some trades so you can make an informed decision. It is possible to earn up to 40 credits towards your high school diploma and you may qualify for a government RAP scholarship.
