Wildcat Weekly
Sullivan Middle School September 2 , 2022
Principals Message
It has been a Wildcat Spirit Week at Sullivan Middle this week! We had so many students show off their school spirit by participating in our first spirit week of the year. It was so good to see the students enjoying themed dress up days, music, and games during our lunches.
Parents, we will be opening up the MPR during lunches this week due to the excessive heat. Please make sure to send your student with a water bottle. Last week during lunches we had an awesome game of volleyball with over 30 students participating!
Great job Wildcats!
We have amazing students, staff and school which would not be possible without the support from our AMAZING community. We are truly Bonsall Strong! At SMS we have a very active and influential group of parents and community partners. I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in the school or district to become involved in one of the following organizations.
Sullivan School Site Council
We are looking for new members for our SMS School Site Council. The SMS School Site Council is a group of parents, teachers, classified staff and students who are elected to help write and oversee the implementation the School Plan for Student Achievement each year. This is a great opportunity for parents to have a greater voice in the direction of the school. There are three (3) parent openings on the School Site Council. The SSC meets on Wednesday's after school starting at 3:00pm. Elections will be held via Google Doc or in person at the SMS Office from September 12 - 19th. Results will be announced September 21st. The next SMS SSC meeting will be held October 5th from 3:00 PM to 3:40PM. To nominate a parent to stand for election please fill out the Parent Nomination form HERE,

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CASPP STATE TESTING)
Parent and Guardian Score Report Letters
Every year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, class work, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. This past spring, our students in grades 3-8 and 11 took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment for English Language Arts and Math or the California Alternate Assessment for English Language Arts and Math. Students in grade 5 and 8, and 11 or 12 also completed the California Science Test or the California Alternate Assessment for Science.
California has moved its Student Score Reports to an electronic format that will be delivered online. Therefore, Bonsall Unified School District has ensured that your students’ scores are available in the AERIES Parent Portal.
Your child’s score report provides helpful information about how well they met the expectations of the grade level and where they are doing well or need more support in each subject. Though summative test results are not used to determine whether a student moves on to the next grade, these results can help you and their teachers identify areas of strength and areas where they might need more support. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your school office or child’s teacher to arrange a conference.
Information on Accessing Student Score Reports
CAASPP and ELPAC Student Score Reports can now be accessed electronically via the BUSD Parent Portal. The BUSD Parent Portal is available at AERIES PARENT PORTAL. More information and directions for accessing the BUSD Parent Portal are available here:
To access Student Score Reports:

PARENTS WE NEED YOUR HELP. Drop off and Pick up School Information.
Parents, Thank you for making our drop off and pick up a smooth success.
If you have multiple students, please have them wait in the parking area of the oldest student. Our 6th grade lot is very impacted. Thank you in advance.
School safety is our main priority and the communication about dropping off and picking up students is crucial.
Because of limited supervision:
Students may be dropped off at 7:30 am unless the student is attending the before-school program.
Students must be picked up no later than 3:00 pm unless the student is in the after-school program.
*If you need to drop off earlier or pick up later than these times please check out our before and after school care.
For safety reasons, the top gate will be shut and only accessible for busses and handicap parking in the morning and after school. Please drop off and pick up in the designated area listed below.
7th-grade students should be picked up in the middle of the parking lot by the stairs.
8th-grade students should be picked up at the bottom of the parking lot by the stairs.

All students eat for free.
The California Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it’s California Meals for All program for the 2022-23 school year. This is a statewide program offering Universal Meals for all school children. The Universal Meal Program will allow us to continue to provide 100% free meals for all children. Students will be able to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch through this program. California Meals for All is great news because:
- CA Meals for All ensures daily access to a free breakfast and free lunch for all students, regardless of program eligibility. This benefits families at all income levels!
- Free meals foster a more positive culture around school meals.
- Children can focus on learning instead of being hungry or feeling uncomfortable choosing school meals.
- Nutrition program staff can focus on supporting students directly, not collecting payments.
- School meals are healthy!
- Having a consistent option for healthy meals helps nourish students to prepare them for life inside and outside the classroom.
- Bonsall Unified School District Nutrition Services will continue to hold to high quality and nutrition standards, which meet or exceed guidelines provided by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and California Department of Education (CDE).
Please Complete the Multipurpose Family Income Form for the 2022-23 school year whether or not you need meal assistance. All meals are free for all students this year. However, we need all families to complete the Multipurpose Family Income Form. The form is available online at https://family.titank12.com/income-form/new?identifier=HLSPHN

Health and Safety
Starting Monday all visitors to the school, including parents, community members, contractors and volunteers will need to scan their Identification into the Raptor System to gain entry to the BHS/SMS campus.
What is the Raptor System?
Raptor is a visitor management system that enhances school security by reading a visitor's drivers’ license (or other approved government issued ID), comparing information against a sex offender and law enforcement databases to alert school administrators and local law enforcement if a match is found. Once cleared through the system, a visitor badge is produced that includes a photo, name of the visitor, date & time, and destination. The Raptor system is designed to permanently replace paper sign ins.
How does Raptor work?
Raptor compares government-issued ID information to a database that contains registered sex offenders from 50 states, law enforcement databases, and local flags placed into Raptor by district or school personnel. In the event of a match, Raptor alerts designated school
officials.
What is the purpose of the Raptor system?
Raptor enhances and automates visitor management. By proactively alerting personnel to certain potential threats, Raptor allows school administrators and, at times local law enforcement, to take appropriate steps to keep our students, employees, and visitors safe. For approved visitors, the system prints visitor badges that include the visitor’s name, photo, date, and destination. Those badges enable school personnel to quickly determine if visitors are in areas where they should, or should not be.
Why is the Bonsall Unified School District using this system?
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Raptor will provide a consistent, standardized system to track visitors and volunteers. This is especially useful during emergencies to know who is on campus. The system quickly prints visitor badges that include a photo, the name of the visitor, time & date and destination.
Does the school/District have the right to require visitors, even parents, to produce identification before entering the school?
Yes. In accordance with California Penal Code 627, school officials are required to know who is in the building and why they are there, particularly when a student is involved (e.g. early pickup). School officials need to be able to confirm that an individual has the authority to have access to the student. In addition to requiring visitors to give their name and purpose for visiting, it also requires visitors to present proof of identity.
What types of IDs will work in Raptor?
Raptor is able to scan all U.S. government issued licenses, identification cards, s, Matrícula consular ID cards, permanent resident card, active military cards, and passport ID cards (not the full passport).
What does a visitor do if he/she doesn’t have a government-issued ID?
Visitors without a government-issued ID will be required to meet with site administratration. These individuals will be asked to provide their last name, first name, and date of birth for manual entry into Raptor.
Where can I obtain a Government-issued form of identification?
For a CA License visit a local DMV office or go to: www.dmv.org.
For a Military ID card please go to: www.cac.mil/uniformedservices-id-card/
For a Permanent Resident Card please go to: www.uscis.gov/i-90
It is important to note that all parents have a right to participate in their child’s education. If you have any questions about the Raptor system please contact Ms. James at Angela.James@bonsallusd.com
In regards to COVID-19, Bonsall Unified School District continues to prioritize school safety and in-person learning for all students.
In-person learning will continue as we launch the 2022-2023 school year and Masks and COVID vaccines are NOT required in our District. Students who wear a mask will be supported and respected.
With this in mind, BUSD asks all students to practice frequent handwashing, covering one's mouth when sneezing, and take measures to foster a healthy immune system (i.e. proper nutrition, exercise, and rest).
In turn, BUSD will continue to place an emphasis on the proper sanitation of all District schools and facilities and employ various COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
If your student tests positive for COVID-19 please report the result to the school and know they must stay at home for a minimum of 5 days. During this time we encourage you to monitor your students for their well-being and return them to school once they are symptom-free and test negative.
BUSD is and will remain in compliance with all county and state mandates regarding COVID-19.
