Hoboken High School Weekly Update
January 20, 2023
The second marking period comes to a close in 10 days. Mr. Benway is working with a host of students on ensuring their work is completed and submitted. The Academic Support Center is a tool that is available to all students before school, during lunch, and after school. Students must take advantage of this amazing resource. If they prefer the library, that is available the same times with certified staff members to assist with their studies.
Seniors, this is a critical time of the year as you wait to hear from your colleges and universities. Guidance is available for students to assist you through the college application and acceptances, as well as financial aid. This can be an overwhelming time for students and parents, so it is a resource that is available to you should you need the assistance.
On Thursday, Mr. Munoz hosted a guest speaker for our entire sophomore class who are currently taking driver's education. The Catch You Later Foundation Presentation from Pam O'Donnell is aimed at education regarding impaired and distracted driving. For more information visit the website:https://catchyoulater.org/
Congratulations Pedro Gonzalez for having his short film chosen for the Ramapo College New Jersey School Film Festival. Please see more below.
Please review the letter below from Ms. Miller regarding districtwide auditions for our Spring Musical SpongeBob.
Ms. Picc
Congratulations Pedro
Congratulations to Pedro Gonzalez on the success of his film Dreams of a Refugee being chosen for this year’s Ramapo College New Jersey School Film Festival. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, January 28th in the Sharp Theater in the Berrie Center at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
There is no cost for entry, everyone is welcome, and it’s a great chance for family, friends, cast, and crew to see Pedro’s film on the big screen. After the screening, Ramapo will be awarding prizes for Best Editing, Best Writing, Best Cinematography, Best Documentary, Best Fiction Film, Best Acting, and Best of the Fest, which are all chosen by a jury of faculty and Ramapo Digital Filmmaking students. All award recipients will receive a student “Oscar” trophy, as well as category-specific prizes.
In Mr. MacAulay's class, students have been working on original social justice film projects. They wrote a paradigm to a screenplay or dub sheet and then shot and edited their film. Pedro wanted to tell the story of a person who wants to come to our country to earn a better living. He explained that in post-production he refined the story by adding stock footage to create a stronger narrative.
We are so proud of your talents Pedro; best of luck at the festival.
Robotics Competition
We have a working robot! Our robot now moves, grabs cones, and can effectively put cones in specific locations. We need to code the automation part of the competition. Next week we plan to work with Hoboken Charter School to prepare for the competition on January, 29th.

Guidance
The first step of the process is to create an FSA ID. The student/graduating senior should have an FSA ID and at least one parent/guardian should have an FSA ID. Please see the attached video that outlines the steps to attain an FSA ID.
Once your FSA ID has been created, it's time to start working on the FAFSA! You will need to have the following close by to complete the FAFSA form:
- You and Your Child's FSA ID
- You and Your Child's Social Security Number
- Your Federal Income Tax Return
- Any Records of Untaxed Income
- Estimated Amount of Money in Checking or Savings Accounts
- List of Potential Colleges/Universities Your Child is Considering
- The first is a breakdown of the items listed above that you can find by clicking here.
- The second is a step-by-step video that further explains each step of the FAFSA process, which can be accessed by clicking here.
Once the FAFSA is completed and submitted, you are highly encouraged to apply for New Jersey state aid through HESAA. This would be beneficial for students who are considering staying in New Jersey and pursuing their higher education at an in-state college or university. I've attached a document that further details the HESAA process as well.
In addition to our College Visits this week, a group of 10th and 11th grade students were able to sit for a Stevens Pre-College Program Information Session. These programs allow you to explore your ideas and interests in a pressure-free, inspiring academic environment. During these programs, you will be working with cutting edge technology, collaborating with faculty and other students from around the country, and exploring potential college majors. Other pre-college programs that we have worked with in the past are listed at the link below:
On Thursday, January 19th, Guidance hosted their annual PSAT Interpretation Night. This was an opportunity to review your PSAT scores and find out what those scores mean in comparison to various benchmarks, as well as how to best prepare for the SAT or ACT. The Presentation will be available to families in the coming days.
As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gleason & Mr. Terry.
Ms. Patel's Biologists
Students in the Biology CP classes are currently learning about the structures and functions of cells. In order to observe and study cells, the students reviewed their compound light microscope skills. They reviewed the parts and functions of the microscope and also practiced creating wet mount temporary slides during the lab. They used the microscope to examine their letter “e” under the microscope and sketched their view under low and high magnification. During the lab, the students were also able to explore the purpose of various features of a microscope as well as their frame of view and depth perception of the specimen being viewed.
Ms. Wilson's Pre AP Geometry
This week, Pre-AP geometry students have been working on their knowledge of transformations. We began by defining the three different types of symmetry and then grew their understanding of the three rigid motions (rotations, translations, and reflections) from there. Students used Geometry Desmos to explore each one before making posters showcasing the transformations and explaining how to find corresponding points. All of these ideas will be used moving forward to develop their understanding of congruent figures.
English Language Arts
This week, the students in grades 9-11 took the mid-year LinkIt assessment during their English classes. The LinkIt is administered during September, January, and May; the data is shared with the students to let them see their growth in English Language Arts skills throughout the school year. The assessment tests them on their knowledge of vocabulary, their reading comprehension, and their ability to identify textual evidence to support their responses. They have been reading historical documents - The Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence, for example - to prepare for the rigor of the LinkIt assessment.
Literary Magazine
The Literary Magazine Club is excited to share the Fall/Winter Edition of the magazine, which features photography, artwork, poetry, and short stories submitted by Hoboken High School students. The Literary Magazine Club meets every Tuesday in Room 310 after school. Students do not have to be a member of the club to submit their work, but they are encouraged to join.

Way to Go Redwings!!!
Classroom Without Walls
Hoboken High School's Classroom Without Walls program is connected to our International Club with a focus on issues and events that are global, both domestically and internationally. We focus on authentic learning experiences, bringing awareness to our school community of the different global communities worldwide. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware, explore new ideas, and grow their potential. Students who partake in this opportunity will grow their social skills, connect to their studies outside of the classroom, and set themselves apart when applying to college and their future careers. Students can also earn high school or college credit on tour by creating their own online research projects. Last year, our Redwings went on a Grecian Odyssey, walked in the footsteps of ancient Greeks, and explored Peru, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca. In less than three months, we will embark on our next journey to explore Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. We are attaching a detailed itinerary of our Spring 2023 -Charting the Galapagos Islands tour. What’s next for our program of studies? During the Spring of 2024, we are heading to Portugal, Spain, and France, and we have many other plans in the works that we will announce shortly. We partner with Education First to help plan and organize our tours. We thought it would be nice to let you hear from some families that have traveled with EF.
On value
“As parents, you’re writing checks for all these things that you do—soccer, soccer cleats, show choir…whatever it is that you’re doing. This, to me, when I look back now that my kids are in college, is the best thing we did for our kids.”
Janice Z.
Parent from Illinois
On educational impact
“After seeing the world and seeing all the good that you can do, I certainly think that pushed you forward to go into the career and the major that you are going into now.”

Future Collegiate Student Athlete Academy
The Hoboken High School Athletic Department is launching a new academy for student athletes. The Future Collegiate Student Athlete Academy (FCSAA) was established to assist high school students who are interested in continuing their athletic pursuits while furthering their education at the next level.
The FCSAA will bond Hoboken High School’s student athletes and their families together, regardless of the sport, with a series of informational dinner sessions that will outline the eligibility, recruitment, scholarship and selection processes associated with NCAA programs across the country. Participants will explore the differences between NCAA Division I, II, and III programs and speak with Hoboken High School graduates who are playing or have played sports at the college level.
All prospective NCAA student athletes from Hoboken High School are invited to participate in the Future Collegiate Student Athlete Academy (FCSAA). In addition, 8th grade students from Hoboken Middle School and their parents are also invited to attend each of the informational sessions in order to get a head start on the collegiate athletics process.
Each session will be from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM in the Hoboken High School Cafeteria.
