Arkansas History
Project: Arkansas Beginnings
This Project will take students from the early people of Arkansas until right before the start of the Civil War. Students will look at ancient Native American tribes of Arkansas and how Arkansas gained statehood.
Math
Unit 2: Introducing Proportional Relationships
This unit provides multiple representations of proportional relationships, including tables, equations, and graphs. These representations and terms are offered as students reason about situations that involve constant speed, unit pricing, and measurement conversions.
Science
Project: A Balanced Biosphere
A new film based off The Hunger Games is coming out next year. The students will use what they learn about how Earth’s ecosystems are formed in order to design a new arena for the film. Thus, their arena should look like an ecosystem one might see on Earth. As a group of Arena Designers, students decide where their arena is located, what is in their arena (geological features, natural resources, living and non-living things) and how the organisms interact. They also design a challenge for the contestants in the arena.
At the end of this Project, groups present their arena design (an Arena Model) to the director for their next film. Students have the option of presenting their arena as a diorama or poster-sized map. As individuals, they then create a Self-Guided Tour of their group’s arena, in the form of a brochure or flyer, so that the director has additional materials to consider as they make their decision about which type of arena to use in the upcoming movie.
Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor, students. . .

Project: The Crossover
We jump right into this story of twin brothers competing to be the best at basketball. They are forced to follow in the footsteps of their father, a famous basketball player. The story of their lives and the challenges they face is told through poetry. This allows us to feel the ups and downs of life with Joshua Bell.
The rhythm and flow of poetry gives us a lot to explore:
Structures that make poetry unique and emotional
Word choice to make the writing bounce off the page, just like basketball.
In this project students will:
Write a selection of poems to tell their own story (Poem Story)
Write an analytical paragraph (Poem Analysis)
