THE LAWS OF BELIEF
I BELIEVE YOU MATTER!!
I Believe in Relationships
The unlikely relationship between the WWII veteran and three year old boy reminds us that relationships matter. By now, you now know your students. But do you really know them? Do you know what makes them tick, what they see when they wake up in the morning, their list of favorites? Emmitt’s favorite food was tomatoes. What are your students’ favorite foods?
Do your students know your favorite food? Share! Building relationships is a two way streak, modeled by you every step of your day. Reservations such as this effort being a waste of time or not necessary in our profession are roadblocks to building relationships. In this article https://www.edutopia.org/blog/sharing-connections-that-students-value-penny-and-james-sturtevant , Penny and James Sturtevant share “What these reservations fail to appreciate (and this is most important) is that contemporary youth are totally comfortable sharing and reading trivial details about daily existence. Think about what students post on social media.” If you are looking for an insightful quick read, head to the article titled "Sharing the connections that Students Value."
Thinking back to the beginning of our year together, remember the focus on believing in relationships. How are your relationships with your students? Have you strengthened them? Fostered new relationships? Have you shared seemingly trivial details about daily existence? Top 20 authors encourage us to encapsulate the three Core messages every human being is wired with: Identity, Worth, and Purpose (48.) I encourage you to seek out and strengthen these as you continue building relationships with your students.
Last week, you were encouraged to prepare for your performance. Let’s carry that one step further this week, preparing for your performance in fostering the relationships that you began to create at open house. Here a few hints to assist you in your journey:
Top Ten Tips for Successfully Building Relationships with Students:
1. Be visible. Greet and talk with students. Set the tone of the class.
2. Take interest in your students’ talents and activities. Attend the game, meet, or show or ask for pictures and updates from the event.
3. Listen, sometimes without saying a word. WAIT. (Why Am I Talking?!) Listen.
4. Treat students with respect. This will be returned three-fold.
5. Individualize. Increase student self-worth.
6. Be goodwill on a good day. Interact with students and acknowledge the good that you see.
7. Teach vocabulary daily. Support strong reading and speaking habits, strengthening conversations and building self-esteem that will transfer outside the school day.
8. Laugh daily, smile always, sing often, and dance as though no one is watching. Do these things IN FRONT OF your students. Powerful, isn’t it?!
9. Start a new chapter. Like Erling, blow a new path of snow to create a connection with students.
10. Remember: I believe in YOU.
