Looking to the Future: A Series of Interviews with Former Students from CALC
Alumni Spotlight: Nancy Munoz
by Gabriela de Oliveira on November 17, 2021
Nancy is from Puerto Rico and speaks beautifully fluent Spanish. It has been 9 years since she moved to the United States. Since then Nancy developed her English skills and now, she has an awesome command of the language. She came here and directly entered Clinton Adult Learning Center (CALC). Nancy studied at CALC for a year and a half.
Nancy started at the intermediate level and in one year filled with dedication, she went to the advanced classes. With this experience, she had the chance to make new friends and be embraced by a new family. She commented that one of the special things she experienced was feeling welcome by everyone. Nancy, like many students, needed to stop coming to the classes because she started to work. Before she left she had the chance to reach the goals she set for herself. One of her main goals was to learn to speak so she could find a job, help her children, and have the life she hoped.
When she started at CALC she was very shy and afraid of talking. But, with time, she started to gain more confidence in English and in life. Nancy had the chance to develop academically, but also socially. The tools that she needed to improve in English were given to her and she took advantage of that. Now, Nancy is working in the Clinton Public Schools as a family liaison with excellent English skills. Nancy’s advice for the students is “Never give up, reach your dreams. Little by little, everything is possible. Take the chances that life gives you and reach your goals.”
What are you thankful for?
"I am thankful for everything in America after a year of starting a new life here. I have a good job, and I can join a free English class with a friendly teacher and students. It’s a blessing, and it helps my English become better in community, life, and work." Huong from Deb’s class
"This holiday I will be home cooking with my family and I’m so happy because my family will come to my house." Osvaldo from Danielle’s class
"I am thankful for everything in my life- principally for health and for the ability to solve problems because each problem helps me to have more knowledge and wisdom." Rafael from Deb’s class
"I’m very thankful for each day in my life. Our life is here and now. We don’t know if we have one day more. That is why I’m thankful for my moment." Leticia from Ingrid’s class
"I’m thankful for my family (brother, sister, mom). It’s not every day we’re together but when the holidays come it’s the best time ever." Cedric from Roger’s class
"I am thankful for the CALC. I am thankful for my family. I am thankful to be healthy. I am thankful for my job." Naiara from Michaun’s class
