The Light Bulb

The Effects of Technology

Timeline of Innovations

1. 1802 – Humphry Davy invents the first electric light, too short-lasting and too bright for practical use

2. 1840 – Warren de la Rue uses a platinum filament improving the longevity of the light, however, it was too expensive and therefor impractical.

3. 1878 – Joseph Wilson Swan creates a light bulb using treated cotton thread in an evacuated glass bulb, increasing longevity and removing blackening problem.

4. 1879 – Thomas Edison creates a light bulb with a carbonized bamboo filament, increasing longevity to over 1200 hours.

5. 1906 – The General Electric Company patents a method of making tungsten filaments for incandescent light bulbs.

6. 1939 – GE and Westinghouse introduce fluorescent light bulbs that were more energy efficient than incandescent.

7. 1962 – Nick Holonyak, Jr., invents first Light Emitting Diode (LED)
