Reading
We have learned so much from our nonfiction books this week! Not only did we continue to develop our understanding of how to read a nonfiction book by using the glossary, table of context, labels, and headings, but we also gathered great information from many books: Healthy Habits, How Bees Make Honey, and I See a Kookaburra! When reading Healthy Habits, we noticed that there are many ways to stay healthy beyond what we eat. We need to take care of our bodies by brushing our teeth, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, exercising, and protecting our skin. We learned many new interesting facts about how bees work together to build honeycombs and make honey. We thought it was a little gross that they mix nectar with juices from their mouths to make honey... yuck spit! Our favorite book this week was, I see a Kookaburra! It taught us about many new animals and how they adapt to their environments. We looked for animals hidden in the pictures in many different habitats around the world. Students loved to learn new information from these nonfiction books!
Math
I have been so impressed with our progress in math. We are developing an understanding of number sense and place value by digging deeper into what teen numbers represent. It is fantastic to see students apply their knowledge of these numbers in various ways. Students are able to identify teen numbers and can describe these numbers as having a group of ten and some more ones. One way we have applied this learning was by when we were discussing the ways to add our numbers in the question of the day. A few students described that 12+7 was the same as 10+2+7. Instead of the typical process of putting the greater number in our heads and counting on, we were able to add 2+7 much more quickly and then realized that 10+9 was a group of 10 and 9 ones or 19. This type of application shows such a great understanding of number sense and place value!!
Writing
In the weeks leading to winter break, I was hoping to add some festivity to our days. The holidays always remind me of holiday lights and kindness, so we will be brightening our classroom with acts of kindness. For the next couple weeks, we will highlight our random acts of kindness by making a conscious effort to appreciate the little ways we help each other. I have cut out a number of light bulbs that students will have opportunities to write out the ways their classmates have brightened their day. At the end of each day student will be able to give the light bulb to the peer that made their day better in order to acknowledge their kindness. These kind kindergartners will be able to add their light bulb to our string of lights that we will hang around the classroom. It will be a fantastic authentic writing opportunity for students, but I am really looking forward to seeing students focus on the acts of kindness this holiday season!
