Dimensionally Transcendental
Interlibrary loan is a standard practice in every type of library I have ever heard of. We all regularly exchange books and other items around the country and, occasionally, around the world by the simple act of dropping them in the mail. A little-know aspect of this system is the time-honored tradition of avoiding the use of new envelopes and boxes for shipping. Ideally, one returns items in the containers they came in, no matter how much repair is required. The academic libraries are, needless to say, the champions in this field; sometimes sending things that are 95% tape and 5% mailing label with only the faintest lingering impression of the concept of an envelope. I have long suspected that some of the big universities do, in fact, have physicists in their mail rooms.
Normally this time of year I would be writing about renewal and growth and birdies singing and lambs frolicking etc. But it is gray and sleeting like February today, so I thought I'd give you something amusing to ponder while we hunker down and wait to see if spring will ever come. Maybe in another dimension . . .
