If a note is not submitted to the school office within three days, the absence will be considered unexcused and therefore unlawful.

Medications
There is a district policy that states students cannot bring medication to school unless it is in a labeled container. If it is a prescription medication, it must be in the bottle from the drug store. A school form needs to be completed and signed by the doctor and parent, and must accompany any prescription medication regarding proper dosage. Over-the-counter medications must be in the original container, having labeled it with the student’s name. A parental note AND a doctors order must accompany over-the-counter medications. No medications will be given unless these guidelines are followed.
Student Arrival
Student’s arrival time to school is from 7:20-7:35 AM. Students who are transported by parents, should not be dropped off before 7:20 AM. There is no supervision before this time.
Classes for students begin at 7:40 AM. Any student who arrives after 7:40 AM will be marked as "tardy". These students MUST be brought into school by the parents and MUST stop at the office to be checked in and admitted to school. It is very important that students stop at the office if they arrive tardy so that accurate attendance records can be kept.
Visitors
Due to security measures in all schools and in order to maintain an effective education program for all students, it is essential that as many distractions as possible be eliminated for students and teachers. ALL VISITORS and VOLUNTEERS MUST REPORT TO THE OFFICE before going to another area of the building. You will need to sign in and take a visitor badge. This badge should be worn at all times. All appropriate clearances must be submitted to the district office before volunteering for any school day event, which includes field trips.
If you are visiting or volunteering in a specific classroom, please knock on the teacher’s door before entering the classroom and be sure that your visit takes place within the time of an established appointment with the teacher. If you wish to speak with your child’s teacher, please call and make an appointment with the teacher ahead of timewhen he/she will have the time to speak with you.
Student Handbook
In an effort to “Go Green” we have posted the Student Handbook on the Tuscarora School District/Mercersburg Elementary School website. We are asking each family to review the Student Handbook online. However, if you are unable to access it online, please let us know and we will provide you with a hard copy.
To access the Student Handbook:
- Go to www.tus.k12.pa.us
- Click on “TSD Schools” at the top of the page
- Click on “Mercersburg Elementary School”
- Click on “Parents and Students” and select “Student Handbook” from the list of options.
Please contact us if you would like a paper copy of the student handbook.
Bus Proceedures
Anytime your child will be taking a different bus home or they will be picked up instead of riding their normal bus, a note MUST be sent to school with the following information:
Your child’s name (Please include last name)
Date of bus change
Bus number they will be riding or who will be picking them up
Who they are getting off the bus with, or name and address if not being dropped off at the home of another student.
If going home with a friend, BOTH STUDENTS MUST HAVE A NOTE.
Parent’s signature
*Please Note –if a student tells us that they are to be picked up or ride a different bus than what is documented as their normal/regular schedule, but do not have a note, THEY WILL BE SENT HOME ON THEIR NORMAL BUS. THIS IS SCHOOL POLICY! We do make an effort to get in touch with parents in these situations, but it is not always possible.
