Deerfield Elementary
April 2020
Greetings from the Office!
Hopefully this newsletter finds everyone happy and healthy. As we enter into these unknown territories of online learning and not physically attending school, please know that we are here to support you. We are trying to find a balance between school work and not having your child's teacher in your living room.
I saw this message online and wanted to share (thanks to whomever wrote it):
Don't worry about them regressing in school. Every single kid is in this boat and they will all be ok. When we are back in the classroom, we will all course correct and meet them where they are. Teachers are experts at this! Don't pick fights with your kids because they don't want to do math. Don't scream at your kids for not following the schedule. Don't mandate 2 hours of learning time, if they are resisting it.
If I can leave you with one thing, it's this: at the end of all of this, your kids' mental health will be more important than their academic skills. And how they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during those 4 or more weeks is long gone. So keep that in mind, every single day.
Please don't hesitate to contact the office or myself with questions. We are here to help!
Thanks,
Melinda Kamrath
DES Principal

What's happening in 5th grade?
We will hopefully take our learning on the road, with a field trip to the Hoard Museum and the Milton House (an Underground Railroad stop), and another field trip to Aldo Leopold Center to explore different ecosystems. In May fifth grade will be joining fourth grade at the Buckskinner's Rendezvous in Fort Atkinson. Fifth graders are learning a lot, and having fun too.

2019-20 PTO NEWS
We hope everyone is staying safe inside during this crazy time and are enjoying the extra time with your families. Events for the PTO are a little up in the air at the moment. We hope to get everything settled down in the near future and will do an update post on Facebook soon.
Things we do know:
- School supply kit order forms are due April 4. The order link and code are posted on our Facebook page.
- Culvers share night scheduled on April 7 has been cancelled.
- Debbie Sullivan Enrichment activity for April has been cancelled.
More information will be coming soon on the family dance, teacher appreciation week, and the High Five event.
In March, we did approve a purchase for a new 3D printer for the elementary school. Currently, there is one shared between the whole district and this will allow more flexibility in learning plans and more grades will be able to utilize the equipment.
Our April meeting on Thursday, April 9 has been moved to an Online Meeting! We will be working on getting this scheduled soon and will get a participation link posted. We will be voting in two new officers for the upcoming school year during this meeting as well as figuring out plans for our events. Hope to see you online!

The 2019-2020 meeting dates are as follows:
· Tuesday April 7
· Monday May 11
Our goal is to have at least 2 parents for every grade level attend each meeting so we have a good representation across the school. Please consider joining us! We need parent participation to make this program successful. The agendas and meeting minutes are always posted on the elementary school home page for reference as well as the PTO Facebook page. We will also post periodic updates of PTO happenings and each grade level also has their own Facebook page for grade-specific discussions.
