Notes from the Nurse

Do you know how much sleep your child should be getting? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that school-age children receive 9-12 hours of sleep each night.

If your child is consistently getting less than the recommended hours of sleep it can lead to irritability, difficulty concentrating, headaches, stomachaches, obesity and even high blood pressure and depression. Children who receive adequate sleep have a healthier immune system, can regulate their emotions easier, are absent less from school and have a better memory and school performance.

Here are a few reminders to help your child receive the sleep they need to help them be happy, healthy and successful:

  • Maintain a regular daily routine.
  • Make sleep a priority.
  • Be active during the day.
  • Monitor screen time.
  • Avoid over-scheduling your child.
  • Create a consistent bedtime routine.
