Rome was very famous for it's sports and pastimes. One of it's greatest parts was the Gladiators. Gladiators are some of the fierce people in the world. They fought until they died. The Gladiators choose to fight. They fought in stadiums and amphitheaters. The most famous arena the Gladiators fought at was the Colosseum. Also, Rome had a variety of sports such as swimming, running, boxing, hand ball, and many more. Finally, the Romans showcased the first chariot races. In conclusion, Rome had amazing sports and athletes.
Chariots
Chariots were a big part of the Roman Empire. They were also a very popular race. Most of the races were held in stadiums. People bet money on certain chariots.
Swimming
Swimming was one big sport in Rome. Swimming was originated in about 3000 B.C. Rome believed that swimming was very healthy for the body.
The Colosseum
The Colosseum was a big part of Roman sports and the gladiators. This stadium was were the gladiators fought.
Running
This is a picture of a roman running. Running was also a big sport in Rome. People bet on who they thought who was going to win. Also there were many different distances in running. It ranged from 50 meters to 1 kilometer. Gladiators and athletes also trained in running.
Fishing
Fishing was one pastime for survival. In Romes Empire many people fished for food. The people fished in groups for safety reasons and so they can catch more fish at once.
Gladiator Fighting
Gladiator fighting was the main sport in Rome. there were over 1,500 Gladiators in Rome. There were also many different kinds of Gladiators. There were the Retariis that held a three ponged sword (Like a Pitchfork). Also there were the Bestiarii. They had to fight fierce animals (As shown in the picture.) And Lastly there were the Dimachaeri. They fought with armor and a sword in each hand.
Hand Ball
Handball was invented in Rome.But handball was not that popular. After 100 years it started to become popular. Handball was played with family friends and neighbors.
Boxing
Boxing was a popular sport in Rome. Gladiators trained by boxing. The first boxing gloves were made of strips of leather.
