Happy January! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read our Newsletter. There is a lot of important information. We have included a copy of our Kindergarten daily schedule and the January special schedule.

January Kinder Performance
We are so excited to announce our kindergarten performance this year, Carnival of the Animals, which will take place January 10th at 5:00 in the Prestwick Elementary cafeteria! The PTA meeting will be at 5 and performance followed after.
Kindergarten parents will receive more details as we get closer. Please contact our music teacher, Mrs. Hale, with any questions at chale@littleelmisd.net
What is your child learning this week?
Phonics: Jan 4th-6th: Students will review how to identify the medial sounds inside of a word by isolating and blending the sounds together. Students will also be introduced to the short and long u vowel sound. When learning about the vowel, students will learn how their mouth should be formed to form each vowel sound, provide examples of each letter sound and also distinguish words that have the vowel U and know how to sort them under the right category (short or long). Lastly, students will be adding but, look, up and want to their sight words.
Jan 9th-13th: Students will be reviewing how to identify the final sound of a given word. Students will also be reviewing how to break apart each word and blend the phonemes together. Students will also be adding four new sight words to their list (for, her, him, us)
Reading: Jan. 4th-6th-This week the students will be listening to a couple different winter stories. They will use their retelling skills to write about it. The students will enjoy using graphic organizers for retelling the story and searching for story elements (characters, setting, plot, beginning, middle, and end) . These skills will help improve their reading comprehension and skills.
Jan 9th-13th-Students will be learning about authors purpose. Authors purpose is the reason an author writes about a particular topic (e.g., to persuade, to entertain, to inform, to explain, to analyze, etc.) They will be reading a story and picking the authors purpose. The students will also be picking out the theme of a story. A theme is the central or universal idea of a literary work that often relates to morals and/or values and speaks to the human experience/condition
We will also be reviewing story elements this week.
Writing- Jan.4th-13th In writing students will be developing drafts by writing sentences or labels to write what happened at the beginning, middle, and end.
Math-Jan. 4-6 we will begin looking at addition 1-10 using more manipulatives to show the part part and whole.
Jan. 9-13th-We will complete addition and go onto subtraction 1-10 using manipulatives and showing the separation of them
Social studies-January 4-13th Students will be reviewing rules and expectations. We will also be diving into the patriotic holiday unit. We will learn why patriotic holidays are important and why we celebrate them each year.
Science: Jan 4th-6th: Students will beginning a new science unit where they will learn about the different seasons. Throughout this unit students will need to know the vocabulary and be able to describe their observation over days and seasons. These three days of learning we will focus on learning about a famous scientist that studies seasons/weather, learn about the seasons sequence and learn about different activities you can do within each season.
Jan 9th-13th: This week we will continue learning about seasons. This week the students are studying the specific weather patterns that are found in the given season. Throughout this week students are expected to be able to draw the different weather patterns they feel and see in each season and learn how seasons are caused.
Reminders
.Reminder about transportation changes time call the office @ 972.947.9450 by 2:00pm
As the weather gets cooler, please make sure your child has the appropriate warmer clothes in their backpack.
Having Lunch with Your Child-We have been asked to remind y'all that if you come have lunch with your child, the high tops at the back of the cafeteria or the picnic tables outside are the designated spots for y'all to eat together! You can only eat lunch with your child, they can't invite anyone else to eat with you. Enjoy your time together!
- Please bring library books back on designated days: Alter- Thursdays, Bounkhong- Tuesdays, Fillebrown- Mondays, Rushing- Wednesdays
- Girls- Please wear shorts under your dress/skirts.
- Please wear tennis shoes on your PE days.
- Please SIGN and have your child return their daily folder every day. Also, it's important to bring water bottles and snack everyday. NO JUICE PLEASE!!
- Don't forget to bring guided reading book bags everyday once your child receives them.
- Please read 15 minutes every night with them.
- Please check and clear their take home folder every night.
- Please make sure that your kiddos are wearing their athletic shoes (or bringing them to change into) when their class is scheduled to go to PE. We want to keep everyone safe when they are participating in physical activities.
