Baggy Books!
As many of you realized, I didn't get to send home "baggy books" last week. I was learning how to survive without Ms. Theresa! I will be sending home 5 books this week. Please have your child read one book a day to you. Thanks for supporting your child's reading development!
Ms. Fox and Ms. Chunna Skeen

A Look At Our Week....
Well, last week was exhausting operating without our class angel Ms. Theresa! Luckily, we have used it as an opportunity to grow our leadership roles within the classroom. We have added lots of new jobs and responsibilities to our Leaders board, so that most children each day have a responsibility to fulfill. They have really stepped up to the plate this week: Greeting visitors when they enter the classroom, and asking them how they can help; solving problems at recess in the role of "Buddy"; distributing and supervising clean-up of art materials; returning books to the library; preparing and serving snack; inspecting the room's cleanliness, etc.
Each day your child is discovering the leader in themselves, by fulfilling their responsibilities to the class family. I hope that their newfound sense of leadership is transferring to their home lives. I hope that they are taking responsibility for contributing positively to your home families, just as they do at school. They are such wonderful human beings!
In Science and writing this week we will be learning about endangered species, and researching and writing facts down about endangered primates, in particular.
We will be reading many "Pete the Cat" books this week, in preparation for our Parent screening event on Friday. We will also be reading Skippyjon Jones books this week, in honor of Cinco de Mayo! We will be learning a Mexican Folk dance to perform for, and with you, at our Parent event on Friday!
In Fundations we continue to work on digraphs in our reading and writing. Ask your child: "What says /k/?" '/w/""/ch/""/sh/""th"? Answers: ck-sock-k, wh-whistle-w, ch-chin-ch, sh - ship-sh, th-thumb -th.
In Math, it's all about teen numbers and equations. To support their work at home, play "I Spy" with numbers. When you're driving/walking point out teen no.s on signs and in your environment.
Weekly Sight Word Ideas.....
Goodbye Ms. Theresa! We miss you!! Good luck in all your future pursuits, and come visit us!!
Welcome to Chunna Skeen - our new Instructional Assistant!
Chunna has actually subbed for a day in our classroom before. She has met the kids, and understands the dynamics of our classroom already. She is hugely experienced - she has taught classes of 60 students in China, her native homeland. Chunna has been living and teaching in Asheville for many years now, She has promised to teach our students some Mandarin, and some traditional Chinese dances. I am SO excited to welcome her to the family!
I will send out more information on Chunna, and a picture next week. In the meantime, please welcome her warmly to our class family if you meet her!
