RICHLAND REFLECTIONS

Week of 9/12/22 at Richland Elementary School

Big picture
Dear Richland Families,

Today we recognize and remember those most directly affected by 9/11 and pledge to stand united as a community and country.

We had another amazing week! Look for an edition of this newsletter every week to keep updated on all of our intentional practices this year. This week, we officially kicked off our School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) with our acknowledgment system at our first Leader in Me assembly! Students receive leader tickets when displaying one of the seven habits. Be sure to check out highlights of the assembly below including a video of our student Spirit Squad leading the school in our Richland Mission cheer. Soon you'll be cheering Lead Myself, Lead Together, Lead with Balance too!

New this year! In each newsletter, we will have a Specialist Spotlight from library, art, music, or physical education. We will also have a Support Spotlight each week where you'll hear from a Math or Reading Interventionist and Coach, our English Language Development teacher, our Speech and Language Pathologist, our Occupational Therapist, or our School Counselor, Mrs. Schmolk.

Please consider getting involved with our amazing Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). See below for meeting dates and an opportunity to join our school-wide Directory. Upcoming dates for all school happenings, as well as links to past editions of our newsletters, are always at the end of newsletters.

We invite all parents and guardians to Back to School Night on 9/19. You'll start the night meeting teachers and the wonderful staff I just referenced. Then, you'll choose a session with your child's teacher. Keep reading for more information.

The Richland Spirit Wear Store is open through 9/19! See below for ordering information.

Have a wonderful week!

OUR FIRST LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY!

OUR STUDENT SPIRIT SQUAD LED THE SCHOOL IN OUR RICHLAND MISSION CHEER!

Students and staff planned and led our first leadership assembly! It was the official start to our positive school-wide behavior intervention and supports (PBIS) acknowledgment system. You may already have seen leader tickets come home. Our leaderboard is getting very close to our first ten in a row!

Ask your children to tell you about the assembly and how Richie, the Richland Panther, helped us learn about leader tickets.

MATH UPDATE FROM MRS. FROSHOUR

FIRST IN MATH ONLINE PROGRAM

Early skill development and practice is key to success in math!

I am very excited to share that our school district is using the innovative FIRST IN MATH® ONLINE PROGRAM to help K-6 students practice and master essential mathematics skills. First In Math’s game-style activities increase math and problem-solving skills. Students may use the website at any time on a device with Internet access.

For each student enrolled in the program, one additional User ID for a family member or friend to use is automatically added! This FamilyLink® login is available on the student's Homepage. Look for directions to come home with your child.

First In Math's ‘Automatic Awards’ system encourages students and spurs academic achievement. Students automatically receive Digital Ribbons and Digital Certificates in their Notifications Envelope- this includes all module areas and Player Of The Day. Classroom teachers will celebrate student achievement and a school wide display will be coming shortly- stay tuned! We ask that you partner with us and encourage your child to play a few minutes each day to greatly increase their math skills, as well as their overall academic confidence and performance.

PURCHASING BREAKFAST OR LUNCH AT SCHOOL

Big picture

QCSD wants to remind families that the federal program to waive the cost of meals for all students has expired. Families can make online payments for student meals at SchoolCafe. Lunch accounts for students at the Upper Bucks County Technical School are separate and may be paid at My Payments Plus.

In addition, we’re asking that QCSD families fill out 2022-2023 Free & Reduced Meal Applications. Households must submit a new application each school year unless they receive a Direct Certification letter, which was mailed by the district in mid-August.

A situation has arisen for families with students on Free and Reduced Meals where your child may be charged for not taking enough items to qualify as a reimbursable meal. This is a federal regulation. Here’s information on what a meal consists of. Please speak with your student(s) to avoid this issue.

Click here to access all information about Free & Reduced meals in QCSD.

If you have questions, please email sreiss@qcsd.org or call 215-529-2012.

Here is a video on 2022-2023 school meal changes.

VISIT THE LIBRARY WITH MR. NAGLE

WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY!

Our librarian, Mr. Nagle, and our Library Secretary, Mrs. Lear, are looking forward to turning your children into readers and researchers this school year. Much is planned to promote literature and develop research skills. Library Instruction The library operates on a four day cycle in which each class meets once per cycle, receiving 45 minutes of library instruction. Instruction consists of research skills and literature appreciation.

Each student has a barcode number on file in our library. It is used in conjunction

with our computerized circulation system allowing students to check out books. Students return

their books every cycle, on the following library day. Overdue fines are not charged, however, a student may not check out another book until the borrowed book has been returned.

We will have two book fairs this year. Our first is December 2-7!

Contact Mrs. Nagle at jnagle@qcsd.org.

Let’s Jump into Fall! An Opportunity to exercise and have fun with friends while supporting your school!

Funds raised will be used to directly benefit each Student’s experience at RES by providing classroom funds for our teachers and staff! Please consider donating here.

Richland's PTO is creating an OPTIONAL school-wide directory this year!

If you would like to participate, please visit this link to complete the form.

A separate form must be completed for each child. Please submit forms by Friday, September 30 so that the completed directory can be sent out to participating families in October!

WHAT IS LEADER IN ME?

Leader in Me is a philosophy used at our school to promote leadership qualities in our students! Students learn about and practice our 7 habits daily. Those habits are as follows:

  1. Be proactive

  2. Begin with the end in mind

  3. Put first things first

  4. Think win-win

  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  6. Synergize

  7. Sharpen the Saw

What will my child gain from Leader in Me?

Each day at Richland, students are encouraged to show the 7 habits. Students receive lessons focused on showing these habits in all areas of our school. Lessons include teaching students what these ideas look like in each area and practicing what those behaviors look like. Students will continue to receive these types of lessons throughout the year.

What is the Leaderboard?

Each day, adults in the school building have tickets to give to any student they see exhibiting one of the 7 habits. Once a student receives a Leader Ticket, he or she will go to the office to sign our school Leader Book, pick a number at random for the placement of their ticket on the Leaderboard, and will bring home a postcard to show you so that you may share in their good news! Once the student has a ticket on the board, he or she is eligible to receive the "mystery motivator". When ten tickets in a row are up on the board, those students will spin a wheel to receive a mystery motivator prize. Examples of motivators are extra recess, lunch with Mrs. Zuerblis, and many more.

How can I help from home?

We encourage you to discuss the program with your child at home. The characteristics of the 7 habits encourage responsibility and ownership of one's actions, as well as other leadership qualities. Ask your child to use the ideas shared at school when at home and in the neighborhood, and routinely check in with your child on how he or she is demonstrating these characteristics at school.
