Causes

Many mental health professionals believe both learned and inherited factors play a role in development. The tendency for histrionic disorder to run in families suggest that the genetic susceptibility to be inherited.

Environmental factors:

  1. lack of criticism
  2. punishment as a child
  3. unpredictable attention given
  4. way people learn to cope with stress
  5. confusion of types of behavior earn approval

Symptoms

  1. seeks attention
  2. talks dramatically with strong opinions
  3. easily influenced
  4. rapidly changing emotion
  5. thinks relationships are closer than they are
  6. great people skills but often use these skills to manipulate others

Signs

  1. seem uncomfortable in situations where they are not main attention
  2. shows self-dramatization/ exaggerated expression of emotion
  3. uses their physical attention to draw attention to themself

Treatment

  1. psycho therapy
  2. clinical psychologist

Complications

  1. intense
  2. unstable emotions and distorted self-images
  3. self esteem depends on the approve of others
  4. overwhelming desire to be noticed
  5. inappropriate way to seek attention (sexually)
