Histrionic personality disorder

Causes
Many mental health professionals believe both learned and inherited factors play a role in development. The tendency for histrionic disorder to run in families suggest that the genetic susceptibility to be inherited.
Environmental factors:
- lack of criticism
- punishment as a child
- unpredictable attention given
- way people learn to cope with stress
- confusion of types of behavior earn approval
Symptoms
- seeks attention
- talks dramatically with strong opinions
- easily influenced
- rapidly changing emotion
- thinks relationships are closer than they are
- great people skills but often use these skills to manipulate others
Signs
- seem uncomfortable in situations where they are not main attention
- shows self-dramatization/ exaggerated expression of emotion
- uses their physical attention to draw attention to themself
Treatment

- clinical psychologist
Complications
- intense
- unstable emotions and distorted self-images
- self esteem depends on the approve of others
- overwhelming desire to be noticed
- inappropriate way to seek attention (sexually)
