OUR ENGLISH CLASS
To: Parents of 6th Grade students
In recent classes we have discussed the importance of resilience (having the strength of character to bounce back and succeed after defeat or serious injury) and resourcefulness (being able to do the best you can with whatever you have). from the journeys book, we read the story of a young woman who needed her left leg amputated, but who bounced back to compete in the Paralympics. Our core book for this semester is Island of the Blue Dolphins, which is a compelling tale of a woman who showed great courage and resourcefulness to survive almost 20 years alone on an island over 100 km off the coast of California.
Resilience and resourcefulness are two of the qualities needed to successfully complete a Summative Task and during this past week, we have seen the students working together to produce thought-provoking PPTs and to role-play scenes that illustrate their Central Ideas. Since the theme is “Who We Are”, we expected them to build upon what they have learned and thought about over the last 6 weeks on the topic of what influences people to become the kind of unique individuals they are. Is it mostly culture? beliefs? parents? the environment? or a mixture of each one? Working in collaboration with other students hasn’t always been easy and there were some personality conflicts, but we believe that the training in cooperation they get through this is as valuable as the other lessons.
Most students have recently completed the Reading Evaluation – which is how we measure the level of reading material that is suitable for them. Many of them have made notable progress since last year; however, it is essential that all students make consistent progress in their reading. For this reason, we would like to ask you to encourage your child to regularly take advantage of the Raz-kids program (at least twice a week). This resource provides many opportunities for kids to read about things they are interested in (thousands of books to choose from); with an ‘audio book’ feature that allows them to hear someone read the book as they read the text (a great way to improve listening skills and their pronunciation at the same time). There are also basic comprehension questions at the end of each book to give the readers a chance to see if they really did understand the material.
